Said Nursi wrote that the world once appeared to him like a many-layered rosebud: worlds wrapped within worlds, darkness upon darkness, until a divine name suddenly lit each one from within.

Did he really see something? Or was it his brain, his culture, his language? Or was it the workings of a mysterious reality that underpins everything around us?

As modern people, we cannot help asking these questions. In this course, Asst. Prof. Albert Frolov takes them seriously, and brings Said Nursi into conversation with some of the most influential modern thinkers on mysticism: William James, William T. Stace, John Hick, and Bernard Lonergan.

The Enigma of Creation: Consciousness is an interdisciplinary exploration of one of the most fundamental mysteries of human existence: conscious experience. The course examines how we perceive, feel, think, and experience reality from within, bringing revelation and Islamic spirituality into conversation with philosophy, literature, neuroscience, and contemporary philosophy of mind.

The course is grounded primarily in the Qur’an and the perspectives of Al-Ghazālī, Said Nursi, and Fethullah Gülen, whose approaches to the soul and inner life provide the central framework through which other thinkers and traditions are considered. Rather than presenting these perspectives as disconnected theories, the course explores their convergences and differences within a coherent spiritual and intellectual framework.

Teaching is primarily Socratic and dialogical, with active participant engagement throughout each session. Through self-observation, ordinary experience, metaphors, thought experiments, philosophical dialogue, and guided reflection, participants are invited not only to think about consciousness theoretically, but also to attend closely to their own inner experience. Bishop Berkeley’s dialogical method is also used as a way of examining the relationship between the mental and the physical.

This course examines the life of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ thematically. Moving beyond a purely chronological history, this class focuses on the “Prophetic Model” as a blueprint for contemporary ethics, emotional intelligence, and social activism. We will explore how a 7th-century orphan transformed a tribal society into a global community (Ummah) through compassion, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to justice — and what that transformation demands of young Muslims today. The course is designed for high school seniors and undergraduate students: those old enough to ask hard questions and young enough to be shaped by the answers.
