Well, here we are! The last full week of the campaign and the last pillar of lifestyle medicine - positive social connections. It’s one that is so near and dear to my heart, and I can’t think of a better way to end this journey together.

All of the preceding weeks have covered topics that are incredibly important; however, this week is The Big One. Multiple studies have shown that, once adjusted for poverty status, the number one risk factor for poor health and/or early death is loneliness. Let that sink in for a minute. It’s not exercise, diet, or smoking, but rather the quality of relationships in our lives.

Loneliness and Belonging are something that I struggled with for the first 30 years of my life. Sadly, I am incredibly familiar with the lonely feeling of being surrounded by people but still feeling alone. It was something I always struggled with, and only worsened when I moved to Pennsylvania in 2013. I spent nearly 10 years feeling like a complete outsider and watched and felt my health and well-being completely decline. It wasn’t until a life-changing series of events in 2019 that I actually got help and began to work through my issues with loneliness and belonging, which set me on a healthy new path of incredible healing and growth.

It’s taken 3+ years in therapy and extensive self-work to get to the point where I am today, and I am SO proud of this person I have become. If you are struggling with loneliness and belonging, please please reach out. I hope this week’s content helps even just one of you just a tiny bit ❤️

If you’re local and interested, please come join us for a positive social gathering and fundraiser at Sherman Street Brewing Company tomorrow night (Tuesday 11/8)!

Hiiiiiii friends! We made it to another Phee Friday! Mom says she’s been helping you all learn about avoiding risky substances, so I wanted to share some tips on my favorite ways to stay hydrated.

1. Drinking creek water between chasing rocks
2. Getting water from Bonn Place during walks. They have the BEST water!
3. Puddle water - preferably while laying in it. Bonus points for doing it immediately after mom takes you to the groomer. You show her who’s boss!

Hope this helps you have a fun and hydrated weekend!

This one is a big one for me! If we have met in person, you probably are familiar with my deep love of good beer. I suppose that being raised in NorCal and then going to college in San Diego will do that to you. The first beers I ever had were Anchor Steam and Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, and then was surrounded by amazing craft breweries while in San Diego.

There’s a multitude of reasons why I am consistently assessing my relationship with alcohol, and I am SO thankful for the current (and growing!!) selection of Non-Alcoholic options that are out there. If you, like me, still want the social aspect of going to a brewery/gathering with friends, these are some awesome options for you!

These are just a few of my favorites, but as you can see from this picture of the NA section at , there are so many options! Last night, I picked up a NA gose and a NA porter that I can’t wait to try! I also have a monthly subscription to Hop Splash, so I always have my beverage fridge stocked with it. If you’re going out, has virgin trizzis, has mocktails, carries NA options. I’m sure other businesses in the area have mocktails and carry NA, just ask!

Reducing or cutting out alcohol takes intention, but there are some great and tasty ways to do it!

According to a 2019 study, 61.7% of adult smokers (55.0 million adults) who ever smoked had quit. That’s about 3 in 5 adults!

If you or someone you know are looking to become one of the 3 in 5 current-to-former smokers, check out these resources! Help is out there ❤️

Did you know that approximately 16% of adults in PA and in the US overall reported being current cigarette smokers? (CDC Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, 2020)

When you look at statistics by different groups, these smoking rates are vastly different, with especially high rates among LGBTQ+ populations and people with lower incomes. To***co use - especially within these groups - is completely intertwined with systemic issues and trauma. While individuals simply having knowledge of health impacts isn’t going to directly impact population health, it can be a great first step in behavior change.

If you or anyone you know is a current to***co user and are interested in learning more about how it may be impacting your/their health, or are looking for more resources, please reach out. This is a shame-free space and I’m more than happy to share information!

This week we’re looking at the 5th pillar of Lifestyle Medicine: avoidance of risky substances. Coincidentally, it aligns perfectly with my personal self-commitment to experience November sober. Hopefully this week’s content will help to give you some information and tools to explore and navigate avoiding or reducing the amount of risky substances in your life.

That being said - Because of time constraints/promotional needs, and because I am also a firm believer in the power of ✨paradox✨, we are also going to be jumping ahead with some promotional info for next week (strong social connections). If you need a refresher on paradox, give the Duplass Brothers’ May 13, 2020 episode of Brene Brown’s Unlocking Us podcast a listen. It’s easily one of my favorite episodes.

Hiiiiii friends! It’s finally Phee Friday!
Did you know that one of the best ways to keep your brain, body, and dog happy is to spend time outside? Lots of research has been done studying it and researchers in the U.K. looked at time in nature and overall well-being.

They found people who had spent at least two recreational hours in nature during the previous week reported significantly greater health and well-being. That pattern held true across subgroups including older adults and people with chronic health problems, and the effects were the same whether they got their dose of nature in a single 120-minute session or spread out over the course of the week (Scientific Reports, Vol. 9, No. 1, 2019).

Two. Hours. A. Week! 😱
If it were up to me, I’d say 12 hours a day, but hey, who am I to question scientific research?

If you want more information or studies, talk to my mom! She loves to geek out over that kind of stuff. In the meantime, have a great weekend and go spend some time in nature!

Oh man - today’s tips are something I’m still definitely working on! We’ve all been there: a stressful situation is occurring and it seems like there’s no way out. Next time you’re feeling that way, try one (or all) of these suggestions:

1. Talk kindly to yourself (admittedly, this is the hardest one for me!)
2. Try out these emergency stress stoppers
3. Engage in one of these stress-busting activities

“If you are depressed, you are living in the past. If you are anxious, living in the future. If you are at peace you are living in the moment.” – Lao Tzu

With so much turmoil and uncertainty around us, it is so easy to lose peace. For those of you who know me personally, you are likely aware that I have had an incredibly challenging few years. Embracing mindfulness is something that has been life-changing, and I hope that today’s mindfulness practice is the start of a new journey for at least one person out there.

When you learn to mindfully approach situations and to simply let them exist without judgement, your heart and soul will thank you ❤️
