This week’s is the Black Oystercatcher, a coastal shorebird known for its black plumage, bright red-orange bill, and remarkable ability to forage among rocky shorelines.

Black Oystercatchers rely on healthy intertidal ecosystems to survive, feeding on mussels, limpets, and other marine invertebrates. Because they nest close to shore, they are particularly vulnerable to habitat disturbance, sea level rise, and the growing impacts of climate change on coastal environments.

Our has a fascinating split personality — almost like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde! During the summer breeding season, these bold birds feast on flying insects and fiercely defend their territories, chasing away nearly anything that comes too close.

But winter tells a very different story. Along the Amazon basin, they trade their territorial attitudes for a calmer lifestyle, gathering in flocks and feeding mostly on fruit. Talk about embracing the off-season!

Do you know this bird? If you guessed the Eastern Kingbird, you are correct! Read more: https://rachelcarsoncouncil.org/bird-of-the-week/

Happy Rachel Carson Day! Our fellows celebrated by taking a deep dive into her writing and reflecting on how her work continues to inspire new generations of environmental advocates.

Today is not only a day to honor her enduring legacy, it’s also a reminder that courage, curiosity, and collective action are still powerful drivers of the environmental movement.

Our fellows continue her legacy every day through their advocacy, research, and community building. We are endlessly inspired by their passion for protecting the natural world and creating a more just and sustainable future.

Our annual Advocacy Day is more than a few days spent on Capitol Hill. It’s a chance for students from across the country to build community, strengthen their advocacy skills, and discover the power of their voices in the environmental movement.

One of this year’s participants, MacEva Wright, reflects on her experience and what it meant to step into climate advocacy.

2026 is the year we all vote. Do you want to help increase voter participation in your community?

Here are three ways you can make a difference:
➡️ Phone-bank to remind community members about important election dates
➡️ Write postcards to encourage people to make a voting plan
➡️ Canvass your neighborhood to share voter information face-to-face

Every conversation and every reminder helps strengthen participation in our democracy.

The Ivory-billed Woodpecker was once one of the largest woodpeckers in the world. Today, it’s presumed extinct.

For decades, birders and conservationists have supported habitat protection and restoration efforts in the forests where the species may still survive. Many continue to hold onto hope that one day they will see the Ivory-billed Woodpecker flying through southern skies again.

Although reported sightings in Arkansas, Louisiana, and Florida remain disputed, passionate bird lovers still believe the species may not be gone forever.

Despite prevailing narratives of pessimism, there is a growing edge of the climate movement that is winning: Youth Organizers

“Consider the recent Advocacy Day organized by another USCAN member, the Rachel Carson Council. RCC brought 90 students from across the country to Washington, D.C., where they met directly with federal lawmakers, pressing for bold climate action and environmental protections.”
