Youth Art For Healing

Youth Art For Healing Youth Art For Healing brings works of art created by youth into healthcare environments to provide a sense of comfort, inspiration and healing.

Youth art for healing partners and works closely with healthcare organizations and schools, and nurtures the creativity and empathy of students who create healing works of art for permanent installations in healthcare environments. PHASE I
Youth Art For Healing partners with healthcare organizations to select artwork locations and brainstorm content, medium, measurements, themes and the total numb

er of works of art. Project lists of paintings, photographs, and ceiling tiles are developed in collaboration with our healthcare partners. YAFH distributes project lists to art coordinators in school districts in the Washington Metropolitan Area. PHASE II
Art teachers contact YAFH with interest in participating with their students in our program. Projects are assigned to art teachers in September for completion by their students in March. Presentations provided by YAFH for art teachers and their students, cover the following: Youth Art For Healing’s mission, The nature of healing art, Power of art to inspire, comfort and heal, The healthcare organizations requesting works of art, Benefits of bringing the arts into healthcare environments, Project details (healthcare location, medium, theme, content, measurements and total number of artworks). YAFH provides students with canvases, brushes, paints, and later frames (for some schools, these resources are rare). YAFH Art Advisors oversee and critique sketches and works of art, expanding students’ artistic development and enhancing the final product. Students complete their works of art and provide artist statements about the meaning and inspiration behind their art. PHASE III
A reception is hosted by YAFH for students, families, art teachers, school staff, YAFH partners, healthcare staff, sponsors, donors and supporters to view the works of art and celebrate the students. The students’ works of art are promoted through media and other social media platforms. YAFH delivers the students’ works of art to our healthcare partners for installation. YAFH gratefully accepts donations from individuals, corporations, foundations, healthcare organizations and local businesses.

Youth Art For Healing is very pleased to announce that Giselle Maravilla and Alanna Sidlowski are the recipients of the 2024 YAFH Matt Papirmeister Award. Giselle and Alanna are graduating seniors at Albert Einstein High School in Montgomery County, MD. As part of the award application process, each student must create and submit a painting that is healing, inspirational and comforting for others. “As a child, I always noticed the art[works] in the halls of the hospital and I loved looking at them, especially when new art came in, because there was something to distract me […] Then when I was in high school and my art teacher was advertising the National Arts Honor Society to my class, I joined and our first project was for YAFH. I was so happy to be able to provide something for the place that quite literally saved my life more than once.” – Erin Malone, 2023 Matt Papirmeister Award winner

We’re very excited to see students’ submissions for the 2024 Matt Papirmeister Award. There are only a few more days left before the March 1 deadline and then the YAFH Board will begin reviewing applications.

In the future, I see myself not only expressing myself through art but creating it to help my community and engage them with transformative and impactful art projects. I want art to be the means to speak to people, leave positive messages, and bring joy.” – Isabel Acuna Marin, 2023 Matt Papirmeister Award winner

“I was nervous when painting [for Children’s Hospital]. More nervous than I have ever been painting something because I really wanted it to look nice for the hospital. I didn’t know who would be able to see it, but in my heart, it was for all those children who were just like me — battling with the weight of having something new and scary and maybe even permanent and having to face more doctor visits than their siblings or friends.” – Erin Malone, 2023 Matt Papirmeister Award winner

We’re looking forward to receiving students' applications for the 2024 Matt Papirmeister Award - due by Friday, March 1.

"Through the YAFH experience, I have been able to paint while knowing I can make someone's day better. It inspired me to continue creating the artwork, thinking about how it can help others...I feel very grateful and proud to be able to create a painting for others who may not be able to see scenarios such as nature or meadows in their everyday lives."

"The main reason why I create art is because of the healing aspect. Through art I am able to express my feelings in a way that I think is more meaningful than just saying it. Working together with other artists for this project, getting feedback from others, and being able to share art has added meaning to my life."

"The idea of making art for patients and healthcare workers instead of keeping it for myself is beautiful and the idea pushed me beyond my artistic limits. I created my painting with the intention to calm both the workers and the patients, and I hope the scene and composition accomplish that goal."

"I love visiting art museums and lingering over each painting as if a hidden song wafted forth from the canvas...in a hospital, a little bit of this magical experience would be such a treat, especially compared to the monotony of enduring constant checkups in a bland, cubicle-white room. Artwork is like a window, a reminder of the vibrancy of life outside and a source of hope."

"There were afternoons when I wasn't doing so well, but then I went to paint and felt much better because of the help I got from my teacher and other painters. YAFH taught me about pacing myself and inspired me to do more paintings for charity."
