Welcome to 2025! We hope you were able to celebrate and ring in the new year without compromising your sobriety. This time of year is exciting because it serves as a built-in reset button for all of us, which many people leverage in the form of resolutions and lifestyle changes.

Itโ€™s no secret that recovery requires constant attention. To succeed, recovery requires that you must resolve to make positive changes in life that will make all the difference to your health and happiness. Weโ€™ve compiled a list of some of our favorite recovery-focused, goal-setting tips for the new year. Read on to learn what to prioritize in the year ahead!

The first step to success in 2025 is to identify opportunities for personal growth. Consider which areas you would like to focus on in the new year. For example, do you struggle with anxiety or depression? Make a plan to seek treatment or explore new coping mechanisms to manage your painful feelings.

As the saying goes, โ€œNo one does it alone.โ€ It can be tempting to make your recovery a solitary endeavor, but involving friends and family in your efforts is vital to lasting sobriety.

Surround yourself with positive media and avoid negative, upsetting content.

Spend more time with people who build you up, and less time with those who tear you down, complain, or criticize.

Keep a gratitude journal. Studies show that putting a daily emphasis on what youโ€™re thankful for can significantly boost your mental health.

Get an endorphin boost through exercise. You donโ€™t have to run for miles on a treadmill to reap the benefits of consistent physical activity. Practice yoga with a YouTube video, attend a group fitness dance class, or walk through a local park. Whatever works for you!

After youโ€™ve begun your recovery, you may be reluctant to ask for additional help from friends and loved ones. Resist the urge to isolate yourself when times are tough. If you need financial support โ€ฆ. help managing your responsibilities, donโ€™t hesitate to reach out to those who are nearby. People who love you want you to succeed!

Recovery isnโ€™t a linear process โ€“ you may experience setbacks or find that your old ways arenโ€™t working for you. If this sounds familiar, we encourage you to kick off the new year by seeking additional care, support and treatment early in 2025.

When someone in a family struggles with an addiction, the primary focus is on the addict. While it is crucial to give the addict the tools and support they need to overcome drugs and alcohol, the addictโ€™s family also needs help and support. Addiction is a disease that affects the entire family. Each family member has a role in how their loved oneโ€™s addiction is addressed. When families understand and deal effectively with addiction, they can heal while creating a supportive environment for their loved ones to recover and maintain sobriety.

For families dealing with addiction, the first and most important tip in dealing with addiction is to learn as much about addiction as possible. While itโ€™s difficult, you must understand that addiction is a disease, not something that stems from weakness or lack of faith.

When families deal with addiction, connecting with other people in similar situations provides encouragement and support. Groups such as Alanon and Alateen are designed to help families dealing with substance abuse.

Family therapy for addiction helps break through barriers and gives each family member a voice to be heard.

๐“๐ข๐ฉ #๐Ÿ’: ๐†๐ž๐ญ ๐ƒ๐š๐ข๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐„๐ฑ๐ž๐ซ๐œ๐ข๐ฌ๐ž: Families dealing with addiction often feel a tremendous amount of stress. If that stress goes unresolved, it can result in poor physical and mental health and an increased risk of turning to substances. Exercise releases neurotransmitters such as dopamine which promotes well-being and reduces stress.

A great way to deal with addiction is to have a pastime or hobby to engage in to take oneโ€™s mind off of the stress of supporting an addicted loved one. Having an activity to look forward to promotes psychological well-being and helps support emotional balance.

They often experience distance and/or dysfunction. In addition to dealing with a loved oneโ€™s addiction in a healthy manner, itโ€™s important to do things as a family to remain connected with each other.

๐“๐ข๐ฉ #๐Ÿ–: ๐๐ž ๐€๐ง ๐€๐๐ฏ๐จ๐œ๐š๐ญ๐ž: When families learn about addiction, they realize there is a tremendous amount of misinformation about the disease. Families dealing with addiction can become advocates to educate and empower other families whose loved ones struggle with substance abuse.

Christmas is about the spirit of giving. This Christmas give those struggling with substance abuse a sober community to lean on. In recovery, the community provides a lifeline. Those suffering from substance abuse need the support of a community to stay sober. Receiving the guidance and support of those whoโ€™ve been in their shoes is essential.

Itโ€™s been said that the opposite of addiction is connection. Itโ€™s vital for people in recovery โ€“ especially early recovery โ€“ to find a community of support. Community is essential for maintaining and celebrating sobriety, avoiding feelings of isolation, rediscovering self, and connecting with others who understand what youโ€™re experiencing.

Substance use disorder can be very isolating. Many people struggling with active drugs or alcohol may not be skilled in sharing about the challenges they face. Substance use causes people to withdraw in order to hide the full scope of their use. In addition, the stigma surrounding substance use disorder can lead to shame and silence.

In order to maintain a healthy recovery, itโ€™s important to push yourself to share feelings and ask for help. Itโ€™s essential to have a safe, trusted community of people who have walked the path before you to help face your feelings and challenges and encourage the rediscovery of self. A community of support helps build a practice of sharing, and the understanding that you never have to face anything alone again.

Finding a sober support community is essential, especially during the holidays. Try gathering with sober friends and family, volunteering for a cause you care about, and/or joining a fitness/wellness community like a gym, yoga studio, or hobby club. Is there something you always wanted to try but never seemed to find the time? Now is your chance! Supplementing your recovery program with interests, hobbies, and creative endeavors fuels your mind, body, and spirit and provides a strong foundation for your recovery.

Celebrating success in recovery is crucial because it reinforces positive behaviors, boosts motivation, enhances self-esteem, and serves as a tangible reminder of progress made which increases the likelihood of long-term success. Tracking success during the recovery journey provides a sense of accomplishment and encourages individuals to continue working to achieve their goals, even during challenging times.

Celebrating milestones in recovery helps remind you that progress is possible and that you can overcome challenges. Each milestone signifies a step forward in the healing process. It might be as simple as completing a day of sobriety or reaching a year of recovery.

12/18/2024

Substance abuse, also known as drug abuse, is the use of illegal drugs, prescription or over-the-counter drugs, or alcohol for purposes other than those for which they are meant to be used, or in excessive amounts. Substance abuse may lead to social, physical, emotional, and job-related problems. In addition to possible physical, social, and psychological harm, the use of some drugs may also lead to criminal penalties, although these vary widely depending on the country and local jurisdiction.

Nigeria is one of the epicenters of drug abuse in Africa, and indeed, the world. Nigeria's drug prevalence rate is alarming, with a 15% prevalence rate, almost tripling the global prevalence rate of 5.5% (NDLEA Today, 2021). The prevalence rate of drug abuse is highest among Nigerian youth - as high as 20%โ€“40%.

In Nigeria, To***co, alcohol, co***ne, he**in, diazepam, amphetamine, and codeine are among the most commonly abused drugs among youth in Nigeria (NDLEA Today, 2021). Cannabis is now packaged in the form of cookies, cakes, sweets, and tablets to make it easier to ingest and conceal (NDLEA Today, 2021).

There is also abuse of non-conventional substances such as hydrogen sulfide gas (sewer gas), shoe polish, โ€œsuck-awayโ€ and Premium Motor Spirit (PMS). Most of these chemicals are sniffed โ€œin order to get highโ€. Many of these substances are highly toxic and dangerous to ingest.

For those in recovery, the holidays can come with a stocking full of triggers, including people, places, and events that present both the opportunity and the temptation to return to substance misuse.

Itโ€™s important to establish some holiday-specific recovery and relapse-prevention strategies to ensure the season is both safe and sober as well as merry and bright. Here are 10 tips that can help.

Plan for Success: As the saying goes, a failure to plan is a plan to fail. So make a plan for how youโ€™re going to maintain your sobriety during the season.

Be Aware of Triggers: Limit your time at triggering events.

Keep Notes: Create an informal script on how you will answer questions or refuse alcohol and/or other substances.

Ensure Proper Support: Find a sober friend to attend events with you.

Maintain Treatment: Attending a sober support meeting or even scheduling a telehealth treatment visit before or after triggering events.

Practice Self-Care: Proper nutrition, rest and meditation.

Gather Support: Support is crucial when facing the added stress and substance-use triggers during the holidays. Keep your support team close such as sponsors, sober friends and do not hesitate to seek out additional support through spiritual counselors or group sessions.

Serve Others: If youโ€™re hyper focused on your sobriety, consider shifting a little of that attention to serving others, volunteering and being of support.

Maintain your Routine: Consistent routines help support sobriety so try to maintain your daily routines as you navigate the holiday season.

Stay Mindful and Positive: A positive mindset can turn challenging situations into manageable and even pleasant ones. Purposefully establish a positive outlook for the holidays.

Exercise: As an important part of self-care, exercise can boost both your physical and mental health.

Set Boundaries: Now more than ever itโ€™s important to set boundaries for yourself, for others, for how you want to be treated, for what events youโ€™ll attend, for what youโ€™ll eat, for what youโ€™ll drink. Involve an accountability buddy to help you keep these boundaries.

12/11/2024

Spending time with individuals struggling with substance abuse during the holidays is important because the festive season can be a particularly challenging time for them, often triggering relapse due to increased stress, family dynamics, and the presence of alcohol at social gatherings. Having supportive visits from loved ones can provide a sense of connection and help those in recovery navigate difficult situations while maintaining sobriety.

Why spending time with this in recovery is important

Reduced isolation: Holidays can exacerbate feelings of loneliness. A visit from a loved one can combat isolation and remind them that they are not alone.

Emotional support: The stress of the holidays can be overwhelming for those in recovery, and a supportive visit can provide a much-needed emotional boost.

Positive reinforcement: Showing up to spend time with someone in recovery demonstrates your care and belief in their journey, encouraging them to stay on track.

Trigger management: By being present and offering a distraction, you can help navigate potential triggers like the presence of alcohol or family conflicts at holiday gatherings.

Open communication: Visiting those in recovery creates an opportunity to openly discuss their struggles and challenges during the holiday season, allowing you to provide support and guidance.

Peer support is a powerful component of addiction recovery. Peer support provides a crucial element of connection, shared understanding, and practical guidance. Peer support significantly increases the likelihood of sustained recovery by reducing feelings of isolation, offering motivation through shared experiences, and providing a supportive community to navigate challenges that inevitably arise during recovery.

The importance of peer support in recovery:

Sense of belonging: Connecting with others who have gone through similar struggles creates a sense of belonging and acceptance, which is vital for maintaining a commitment to recovery.

Shared experiences: Peers offer insights and advice based on their own recovery journey, providing a deeper level of understanding than someone without those experiences.

Reduced isolation: Peer support can combat feelings of isolation and loneliness that often accompany recovery.

Increased accountability: Having a supportive peer network can help individuals remain accountable and stay on task to achieve their recovery goals.

Hope and inspiration: Hearing success stories from others in recovery can instill hope and demonstrate that lasting change is possible.

Practical support: Peers can share coping mechanisms, strategies for managing triggers, and access to helpful resources.
