The ICS is a nonprofit promoting Italian culture and language in the DC area and nationally through embassy and Italian government collaboration, a world-class language and music school, and cultural and community events. Started in 1953 by Italian professors from Georgetown University and Italian-Americans in the DC area, ICS has the mission to enhance the appreciation and knowledge of the Italia

n language and culture in the US. It creates opportunities to explore the many facets of Italian culture and strengthen bonds between the Italian and American people through cultural events, scholarships awards, and mainly through the Italian Language Program, founded in 1974 thanks to contributions of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with the purpose of including the Italian language in American Schools. Today the ILP is a leading private school with over 1600 enrollments per year, in courses, workshops and summer camps for children and courses for adults including Literature, Art, History, Archeology, Cooking, Travels, Latin and courses offered by the recently founded ICS Music School.

First days in Villa Bonizella! 🍇🌞

These days we have been enjoying an immersion in the nature of the villa, our residence for a week! We have been picking fruit and vegetables to enjoy during our meals, with the preparation by the talented chef Filomeno. We also visited the local Sheppard to try his pecorino cheese, and relaxed by the pool with a stunning view on the Creste Senesi.

We are getting ready for another wonderful school year and are looking to welcome a new teacher to our Italian Children’s Program.

The position includes teaching on Saturdays, Mondays, and Fridays, as well as after-school courses at local private schools. This is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys working with children and is passionate about promoting the Italian language and culture. There is also the possibility of growing into the role of Children’s Program Coordinator, as well as teaching adult language courses.

Through its program of events and exhibitions, “L’Aquila. Città Multiverso,” the city invites Italy and the world to discover the richness of its culture and the beauty of Abruzzo.

Visitors can explore the stunning Basilica of Santa Maria di Collemaggio, the Basilica of San Bernardino, the historic Forte Spagnolo (Spanish Fortress), and the beautiful Piazza del Duomo. Buon Ferragosto! 🇮🇹🌞

August 15th in Italy is Ferragosto, a public holiday filled with of sunshine, feasts, and deep tradition! While many enjoy beach days or picnics in the mountains, the heart of Ferragosto lies in the Assumption of the Virgin Mary (Santa Maria Assunta), a sacred Catholic feast honoring her ascent into heaven.

In the heart of Abruzzo, in Bominaco, lies a hidden gem of art and spirituality. ✨

The Church of Santa Maria Assunta, together with the beautiful Oratory of San Pellegrino, is home to extraordinary medieval frescoes. Their vivid colors, sacred figures and intricate scenes tell stories of faith; every detail invites you to slow down and admire, surrounded by the silence and beauty of the Abruzzo mountains.

And just above the church, the peaceful eremo di S.Michele blends into the landscape, while the remains of Bominaco Castle rise higher up, offering breathtaking views over the surrounding countryside.

KIDS & TEENS COURSES 2026-2027 🇮🇹

We are pleased to share the class schedule for 2026-27!

Starting with our popular Pre-School Italian Immersion classes for 2-3 year-olds and 4-6 year-olds, our course offerings expand to students through high school, covering levels from beginner to advanced/native speakers.

Classes are offered on Mondays, Fridays, and Saturdays. Older students can also connect online from home to join our courses in Bethesda or Vienna, VA. You can find a description of our program and a summary of courses in the green box on the Kids & Teens webpage, as well as on the flyer below.

Here is a preview:
👉 1st-5th grade advanced level classes are on Saturdays afternoon, Each grade uses Italian school textbooks and are completely in Italian, also covering History and Geography .
👉 6th and 7th grade advanced level (I e II media) are on Monday afternoon.
👉 High school classes both intermediate and advanced level are on Friday afternoon. The high school program advanced level offers three different sillabi that cover the key topics in literature, history, and art history studied in the five years of Italian liceo, regrouped in three years rotating annually. By attending at least three years with us, students will gain a comprehensive understanding of Italian culture from Dante’s era to contemporary times.
👉 Middle school has specific programs per each year.
👉 Beginner, elementary, and intermediate courses for all ages are offered on Mondays, Fridays, and Saturdays. We are also resuming courses in Virginia, adding a few more, and changing location to Vienna, VA. Please check the schedule for details.

Additionally, you can learn about Kids Workshops/Parents’ night out. For our Children’s Chorus, for ages 4–13, and First Approach to Music, for ages 4–7, dates and times are still being determined. We welcome suggestions from families regarding which days would work best for these activities.

ITALIAN COOKING CLASS 🇮🇹👩‍🍳

On Saturday, August 15th, from 11:00 am to 2:30 pm in McLean, Virginia, Ornella will welcome you into her home for a cooking class and guide you through the preparation of three delicious Italian recipes:

🍝 Pasta alla Norma – One of Sicily’s most famous dishes, a hearty and flavorful pasta made with eggplant and tomato sauce.

🍖 Sciusceddu Messinese – A traditional dish from Messina, featuring tender meatballs and goat cheese in a rich and comforting preparation.

🍪 Pizzicotti di Pasta di Mandorle – Traditional Sicilian almond paste cookies. Almonds are one of the region’s signature ingredients, and these small sweets are beloved throughout Sicily.

On Monday, August 10, we will begin another enriching week of Italian Summer Camps for children ages 4–11.

Our Summer Camps offer a fun, full-immersion experience designed to encourage children to speak Italian through engaging activities such as singing, cooking, traditional games, arts and crafts, and outdoor play. Activities take place both indoors and at Battery Lane Park, located just behind the ICS main campus.
