In Loving Memory of Byron Merriweather: Forever In Our Hearts

Today, 19 July, 2021, would have been Byron’s 18th recovery anniversary and we take this space to honor his memory and his commitment to Recovery Africa and his own personal recovery journey.

In 2009, at the Oxford House, Inc. Convention in New Orleans, Paul Molloy asked if anyone was interested in going to Africa to help establish and Oxford House. Byron Merriweather was the only one to raise his hand. He came to Ghana for six weeks then returned to Ghana in 2010. This was the beginning his lifelong commitment to recovery in Ghana and to the family he established there.

Byron went on to be a key person in the establishment of the House of St. Francis; the most widely known treatment facility in Ghana. He also founded WellCare Ghana Wellness Centre, a NGO, and has been a key player in promoting treatment and recovery from addiction in Ghana. WellCare Ghana currently serves clients from several West African countries.

Byron worked closely with Ghana’s Narcotics Control Commission and helped to facilitate training efforts with this organization. He was instrumental in creating a positive environment for Alcoholics and Narcotics Anonymous and other 12 Step groups to flourish in Ghana.

Byron always made time respond to requests for assistance in furthering recovery in Ghana. We are grateful for Byron’s love for Ghana and his contributions to the treatment and recovery community in this country. He was a man of integrity and was committed to improvement of the lives of the most vulnerable. He made a huge difference to so many. It was a privilege to have known this dedicated and honorable man.

We invite you to share your memories of Byron in comments to this post.

Rest in Peace Byron.

Millions of young adults are living with a mental or substance use disorder and many either do not realize they have one or are not paying attention to the signs and not seeking help.

Remember: Asking for help is a normal part of life and no one should ever feel like they have to take on the world 🌎 alone. If you're concerned that you or someone in your life may be drinking too much, using drugs, or dealing with mental illness, there are resources available to help ‡️ https://fal.cn/3fUqp
