“For us, as patriotic Americans who have each taken an oath to uphold the U.S. Constitution, the answer is clear: show up. That conviction is what brought us together to launch Project HALO.” At DI, we are proud to amplify this piece by our Project HALO partners as we work to support trusted local leaders make voting welcoming, reliable, and grounded in civic pride.

🌍 Big news from Democracy International!

We are proud to announce that the Council of Europe has awarded DI a framework contract to provide international consultancy services in social and behavior change — supporting co-operation projects under the Centre of Expertise for Multilevel Governance and the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities.

This partnership reflects something we deeply believe: that lasting democratic progress requires understanding how people think, trust, and engage with their institutions. Behavioral science isn't a bonus — it's essential to good governance.

Democracy International was honored to be a part of Bangladesh’s historical national election and referendum on the July Charter on February 12. Our teams in Dhaka and around the country observed a largely peaceful and democratic process that ushers in a new era of politics and governance, with many first-time parliamentarians elected and a majority of voters endorsing the July Charter reforms to strengthen governance and accountability.

With more than 15 years of supporting political parties, peaceful elections, and democratic institutions in Bangladesh, DI is encouraged by the promise this moment holds for Bangladesh’s future and remains committed to supporting Bangladesh through this political transition and journey of reform.

In a briefing for the International Development Committee of the U.K. Parliament, DI President and CEO Eric Bjornlund and DI Vice President Liza Prendergast, with DI partner Greg Power OBE, Founder and Board Chair of Global Partners Governance, discussed the landscape for international development in the United States, including actions in the U.S. courts and in the U.S. Congress to restore international development funding.

To inform the “Future of UK aid and development assistance” inquiry, we emphasized with Members of Parliament the importance of the U.K.’s continued leadership in advancing governance and human rights in overseas development. We appreciated the opportunity to respond to thoughtful questions from Members of Parliament in this process and we reiterated our commitment to advancing the special relationship between the United States and the United Kingdom.

As the International Development Committee releases its interim report, we are pleased that Members of Parliament have addressed the importance of governance and civil society engagement as key to advancing other core development goals. We support the U.K.’s continued shift from service delivery to systems support, which will require astute approaches to thinking and working politically. As recognized in item 39 of the report, in fragile and conflict-affected states, “the empowerment and equipping of states, and their civil society organisations, should be central to the FCDO’s approach.”
