On 5–6 October 2026, the University of Oxford hosted two days of discussion on the challenges facing democracy and the strategies available to strengthen democratic resilience.

The workshops were co-organised by DPIR's Centre for Democratic Resilience and the Oxford Authoritarian Politics Network, as well as Democracy International, Global Defenders Collective and the Blavatnik School of Government.

In partnership with the Centre for Democratic Resilience in the Department of Politics and International Relations and the Blavatnik School of Government at the University of Oxford and the Global Defenders Collective, Democracy International will co-convene leaders from around the world to discuss how higher education, business, coalitions, and legal institutions can protect democratic governance.

This fall, we will bring together people who specialize in these issues but are rarely in the same room—academics, civil society experts, retired military officials, jurists, coalition builders, national security leaders, human rights defenders, philanthropists, international development professionals, and many others. Together, we will bridge research and practice, clarify areas where evidence remains incomplete or contested, and identify actionable strategies for a shared democratic future.

This 30-month initiative is designed to strengthen sustainable, in-country capacities for effective conflict management and peacebuilding by placing young people at the heart of The Gambia’s democratic transition.
