The latest entry on our "Recover Out Loud" blog features a synopsis of Vic Porter's presentation at this year's Addiction & The Church conference. Here's just an excerpt:

A Truth versus THE Truth...
Pointing to John 1:17, Vic said Jesus doesn’t just bring grace and truth; He is grace and truth. Then he drew a line between “the truth” and “a truth.” In the garden, Satan handed Adam and Eve a truth, something with an element of truth in it that wasn’t the truth. The giveaway, Vic said, is that a truth requires you to perform to be accepted. Grace is what’s been given to you freely.

How many people locked up in prison, or raised in religious homes, only ever wanted to be accepted? That hunger sits behind so much addiction, and it’s why inmates who’ve heard performance preached their whole lives want to hear how to be set free.

"Charles Spurgeon once said: 'The loss of gold is great. The loss of health is more. But the loss of Christ is such a loss as no man can restore.' ... I realized that happiness and pleasure are not the same thing. Psalm 16:11 tells us that the fullness of joy is found in God's presence, not in His gifts."

When our joy is tied to circumstances, it can disappear overnight—but in Christ, we find a lasting peace and fulfillment that never fades. Congratulations to our Heartland Recovery graduates stepping into real freedom and true joy!

God's grace is unlimited, but forgiveness doesn't always erase the earthly consequences of our actions. As Scott shares from the Addiction and the Church conference, facing appropriate consequences isn't God abandoning us—it’s often the exact tool He uses to lead us to genuine heart change and true repentance.

Thanks to Brad Feummeler for bringing our men a great message for last night's PowerBarn service at the Freedom House. He reminded us that waiting on God is never wasted time. Here are "The 5 P's" to help remember five ways God works while we wait:

1. Preparation — God prepares us and our circumstances for what lies ahead.
2. Provision — Waiting transforms us and teaches us to depend on Him.
3. Planning — God’s timing is not always our timing. David had to wait while Saul was king, trusting God’s plan rather than forcing his own.
4. Purification — As Psalm 40:1-3 reminds us, God uses difficult seasons to shape our hearts, remove our pride, and make us more like Him.
5. Proclaiming — In Acts 2:1-14, the disciples waited for God’s appointed time, and Peter boldly proclaimed the gospel when the Holy Spirit came.

The lesson? Just because we are waiting doesn’t mean God isn’t working. He is preparing us, teaching us, refining us, and getting us ready to be used for His glory. Don’t waste the waiting. Trust His timing and let Him do His work in you.
