Le Korsa

Le Korsa Le Korsa collaborates directly with doctors, teachers, students, artists and community leaders in Senegal to improve human lives.

Le Korsa is a nonprofit organization that collaborates directly with doctors, teachers, students, artists and community leaders in Senegal to improve human lives. In Pulaar, a predominant language in the Tambacounda region where we mostly work, “korsa” means “love from respect.”

In the past decade, we have partnered with teachers determined to see children in rural villages gain the education tha

t will enable them to realize their potential; with doctors who labor under taxing conditions to provide health care to everyone who comes to their clinics and hospitals; with women who have recently established agricultural cooperatives to improve their families’ nutrition and develop their own income source; and with artists wanting to expand their work and explore their similarities with, as well as their differences from, people of various backgrounds. Le Korsa is an accredited 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in the U.S., with affiliated organizations in France, Ireland, and the United Kingdom; all donations are tax deductible in those countries. We are also legally incorporated as a charity in Senegal and work closely with their Health and Education Ministries.

Each year, we work with local artists to beautify public spaces within the city. This year, artist Alioune Niang painted murals on the northern wall of Tambacounda’s stadium. The wall spans 210 meters and the murals are about art, culture, sports education and environment. We hope to have more murals being painted at the end of the year!

Last month, the Sinthian women’s gardening collective harvested a good crop of mangoes. They sell the fruit in bulk every year, both locally and to surrounding villages. The women also sell the mangoes in Tambacounda, where they fetch a higher price, so that they can make a profit and support their financial needs. These woman farmers have found a way to care for their families by caring for their community gardens.

It’s Earth Day! Today we celebrate the vast biodiversity of our planet and our continued commitment towards environmental sustainability in Senegal. From setting up trash-sorting sites around the city of Tambacounda to planting trees in the protected forest of Boutou, we will continue to raise awareness of the environmental issues facing us all, both locally and globally. Happy Earth Day from Le Korsa!

The trees that we planted several years ago in the Boutou forest on the outskirts of Tambacounda are thriving. The cashew trees there are even bearing fruit. Cashew trees are evergreen trees, and the nuts are harvested as a seed connected to the bottom of a fruit known as a "cashew apple.”

Did you know that Tambacounda is the largest city in eastern Senegal? With a population of approximately 150,000, Tambacounda is also an important transport hub, connecting Dakar to Mali, Guinea and the Gambia.

Education is at the forefront of many of our projects in Senegal. Over the last twenty years, Le Korsa has made marked strides in improving early and primary education in Tambacounda’s rural villages. Our first school construction project was a kindergarten in Sinthian in 2010, and our efforts have expanded from there.

By building schools, distributing academic supplies, and supporting young women so they can attend high school and college, Le Korsa is helping some of the most disadvantaged students transform their lives.

Since coming to oversee the Foyer in 2015, Madame Sow has been actively involved in women’s empowerment activities in Tambacounda. She has recognised its value for girls who are unable to attend school, which is quite common in Tambacounda. Practical skills, such as sewing, could offer these girls a career path. So Maimouna launched a skills training program through Sutura for girls ranging from 12-16. This cohort attends sewing lessons on Wednesdays and French lessons on Saturdays at the Foyer. The sewing lessons are led by the Sutura seamstresses, who pass down their knowledge to a new generation, equipping them to earn an income and provide for their families. French lessons are taught by Foyer staff, who help the girls strengthen the language skills they’ll need to run a successful small business.

Thanks to years and years of book donations, the library at the Foyer is full. Three walls of floor to ceiling shelves mean that the students of the Foyer have access to physical research materials when they come home from school with homework, and an ample selection of novels and poetry to read for pleasure.
