Recent donation of an old Bessemer photo confirms the existence of a very early ballpark in the current Massie Field area. The ballpark had a 7 foot wooden fence around the field as well as wooden grandstand seats. (1891)

As Marty's marches in the nation’s Memorial Day Parade during the 250th anniversary of the United States, it’s a fitting time to reflect on the deep military history of Bessemer.

Like many communities across the nation, Bessemer formed its American Legion post in the aftermath of World War I. The post was named in honor of Corporal Peter Gedda, the first Bessemer soldier killed in action during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive.

When Gedda’s body returned home, the community gathered to honor his sacrifice with a funeral procession and burial at Hillcrest Cemetery. His family later commissioned a striking monument that still stands today beside the graves of his parents, Battista and Caroline Gedda — a Gold Star Mother whose sacrifice was deeply felt throughout the community.

More than a century later, Bessemer’s legacy of service and remembrance continues to be carried proudly onto the national stage.

Go Go Marty's!
