Pride Month Proclamation from the City of Berwyn for 2026:
Le***an, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Q***r, and Intersex Pride Month Proclamation
WHEREAS, June 28, 1969 marked the one-year anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising in New York City after LGBTQI+ and allied friends rose up and fought against the constant police harassment and discriminatory laws and sparked a civil rights movement for the liberation of the LGBTQI+ people; and
WHEREAS in May 2008, Berwyn Ordinance No. 08-36 was unanimously adopted by council members to include sexual orientation as a protected class; and
WHEREAS in November 2016, a resolution was unanimously adopted by council members declaring the City of Berwyn a Welcoming City, committing to a tradition of community values centered on inclusion, diversity, and safety and stability for all including the growing population of LGBTQI+ residents; and
WHEREAS in June 2018, a proclamation was unanimously adopted by council members to acknowledge the past, honor the present, and celebrate the contributions of the LGBTQI+ community of our city; and
WHEREAS in November 2021, the Administration of Mayor Robert J. Lovero, at the direction of the city council, included an Addendum to the City of Berwyn Employee Handbook to be updated with gender neutral pronouns, in an effort to continue its commitment to promoting a safe, inclusive, and affirming environment; and
WHEREAS on June 11, 2026, at 6:00p.m., in the Community Room of the Berwyn Public Library, located at 2701 Harlem Avenue, in partnership with The Pile Bookstore, will host a community event featuring works by local LGBTQ+ authors, including Berwyn resident Maddie Reardon (Violet's Friend, Free Play), with opportunities for attendees to meet participating authors; and
WHEREAS on June 27, 2026, from 12:00p.m. to 2:00p.m., beginning at Harlem Avenue and Windsor Avenue and proceeding east along Windsor Avenue to East Avenue, in partnership with the Berwyn Development Corporation, the City will celebrate the its 8th Annual Berwyn Pride Walk, reflecting Berwyn's ongoing commitment to fostering a welcoming, inclusive, and connected community for all residents; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that I, Mayor Robert J. Lovero and the members of Berwyn City Council declare the month of June 2026 as LGBTQI+ Pride Month in the City of Berwyn, authorize the annual flying of the LGBTQI+ flag flown at our City Hall during LGBTQI+ Pride Month, show support of our LGBTQI+ community, and urge residents to recognize the contributions made by the members of the LGBTQI+ community and to actively promote the principles of equality, liberty, and justice.
