Today, October 8, we observe Sokol Memorial Day — Památný den sokolstva.
On the night of October 7–8, 1941, acting Reich Protector Reinhard Heydrich ordered a brutal crackdown on the Sokol movement. More than 1,500 Sokol leaders and members were arrested by the Gestapo, the organization was dissolved, and its property was confiscated.
Throughout the N**i occupation of Czechoslovakia, Sokol members played an important role in the resistance. Thousands were imprisoned, sent to concentration camps, or lost their lives because of their courage and commitment to freedom.
Today, Sokol organizations around the world pause to remember those who sacrificed so much and to honor the values they stood for — strength, courage, community, and freedom.
We remember their legacy and carry it forward.
