Thank you to the Oliver family for allowing us to show their beautiful home during our Bungalows and More housewalk last month.
Their large Mediterranean Revival home has played an important role in Berwyn's history. It was built in 1921 as the residence of the Czechoslovakian Consul, and was designed to serve as both a consulate and home. It might be surprising that the consulate would not be located in Chicago, but Berwyn's large Czechoslovakian population made it a good choice for this distinction.
There's evidence of the home's former life in the design. When you walk into the grand front door, you find yourself in an unusually large open living room, perfect for receptions. The formal dining room is also oversized.
There is a rather grand second entrance to the home, specifically designed to receive consulate business. It leads to a staircase that would bring the visitors to the offices on the second floor.
The Oliver family are fairly new owners of the house, snd they have enjoyed researching it's history, as they slowly go about restoring it to its original condition.
