The Berwick Community Dog Park provides local dog owners access to the area’s first well-maintained and spacious site dedicated just for dogs and their owners. During park hours, residents’ licensed dogs will have a place to play and expend energy without endangering or aggravating people, property, or wildlife. Establishing a dog park in the Greater Berwick Area has provided a safe environment fo
r our canine friends and their owners to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle. Not only are our dogs able to hone better relationships with other dogs and people, but dog-owners themselves are able to interact with other fellow dog-owners, establishing a greater sense of community within our town. Our park is 2 ½ acres, surrounded by a six-foot high chain link fence. For added safety, we have a double-gated entry. Covered garbage cans and waste bag dispensers are provided for guests to keep up a clean and well-maintained park. The park provides an adequate amount of shade and seating for summertime comfort. Signs are posted onsite with “Rules and Regulations,” outlining the park’s hours and other important dog park etiquette to ensure a safe environment. What a Dog Park Provides:
-Happiness & Health
Being able to socialize with other dogs while off-leash allows dogs to interact and play in a safe environment. This sort of socialization helps dogs develop healthy relationships with other dogs as well as humans, encouraging them to learn how to behave at and away from the dog park. Allowing dogs to run freely helps them to expend their energy in a productive and controlled manner. Dogs that get regular exercise live healthier lifestyles and tend to be calmer in public and at home.
-A Sense of Community Between People
Creating a common place for dog owners to bring their pets initiates socialization for dogs AND their owners. Dog owners gain easy access to people they can talk with about pet related issues, such as problems they are having with their dog and advice that might be useful. With no public space designated for dogs, it can be difficult for dog owners to socialize their furry friends. Columbia County is home to 9,146 registered dogs. Berwick has 1,642 dogs registered.
