Ive said it before but its always worth repeating. The Lake Milton Fish & Game Club is a family.
Like any family we are all very busy doing our own things and making our own ways but we stop from time to time to take a break from our busy lives to come together and break bread.
There are two words around here that instantly make the mouths water, the mind boggle, and the eyes go all googly. Those two words are "Steak Dinner"
We do this a couple times a year along with a Thanksgiving Breakfast and a Christmas Dinner.
There is just something about a Steak though that brings people together. That special delectable treat sets the tone for the evening. When you know you are having an excellently wood fired grilled steak it sets the bar for the meal as a whole. Folks come in with a little pep in their step and a little kindness in their hearts.
The Steak Dinner Spirit even starts way before the fire is ever lit for the grill. It starts in the homes and the kitchens of all our members and wives as we plan and prepare what we are going to make bake or bring to the community dessert table. Everyone puts their best foot forward and the dessert counter is a sight to behold. This dinner we had overflow desserts and to make space we had to do a seperate cake table. This is exactly the type of problem we love to have... overflow desserts !
In the first 3 pics we see not only club member dedication but also how that fire and grill brings people together. Our Fire-O-Pyro-Maniacs Larry Da Mailman and Pete da Prez were at the Pit lighting the fire at noon for a 6 o'clock dinner. Thats dedication folks. Filtering out to the grill to size things up we have Sutēkishefu the Steak Chef and his right hand man Austin. This is the meeting of the minds that make it all happen. The Grillmaster Chefs confirming the details of fire with Head fire Man in Charge Larry. The pit was proven to be ready. As we got closer to game time support staff snd steak runners started showing up at the grill. Bill, Enock, and John handling support duties on this well oiled machine.
In edition to the meal we had a gun raffle for a Heritage 22 LR Six-Shooter which sold out in short order. This was a 52 card raffle done with a deck of playing cards. Glen was the initial winner on the first draw but he donated it back for a 2nd draw. The final winner was a nice gal that was a guest of Chuck Beck. I didnt catch her name but she was very excited to win.
We also ran a 50/50 at 3 tickets for $5. This was handled by the King Chairman of 50/50 raffles, the club Patriarch and the longest term club member Mr. Jim Connolly. I can personally gaurantee you Jim has 40+ years of 50/50 sales experience in the club and likely many more than that. Club meetings or club Dinners Jim is our 50/50 man. Through his hard work and efforts we saw payouts of $100 and of $45.
As batches of steaks started rolling off the grill Glen got our attention for an opening prayer before the start of the meal. Glen gave an amazing and relevant prayer as he always does.
Behind the scenes kitchen staff had all our side dishes cooked ready and waiting in their chafing dish homes. Many thanks to Clarence, Larry, Dean, Gilbert, and im sure a few others i didnt catch in there helping get stuff ready.
This dinner went off without a..... wellllll... ALMOST without a hitch. The deepest darkest depths on the inside of my baked potato were hinting at the slight crunchiness of underdone potato. These were extra large potatoes and extra full ovens. I think and additional 30-45 minutes would have suited things perfectly.
The steaks were another story. The quality of the Rolli Brothers T-bones was excellent. Beautiful cuts with light marbling throughout. The cooking of the steaks was exeptional. Chris and Austin do an incredible job with this. Need 76 perfectly grilled steaks over an open fire in a very short timeframe ? These guys are your men.
The last few years have been tough. We have experienced much loss in the club and there are many faces missing from our tables as a result. As we remember those we love and miss lets be thankful for our newest members who have come and joined us and keep our tables full.
This steak dinner was a huge success. Attendance was high with at least 78 folks here. Many hands made light work. An active membership is what makes it all work. Newer members getting involved and learning our ways is what makes work year after year... year in year out.
