DA RECAP
Da Bears ended an extraordinary 2026 season this past weekend at the Michigan State Championship, held at SVSU Competing against some of the most elite robotics programs in the state, the team finished ranked 30th overall and closed the season ranked 132nd out of 531 teams in Michigan — a stronger finish than their state debut a year ago.
The robot performed well throughout the weekend, and the team competed with the energy and focus that has defined their entire season. While the team finished in the middle of the pack during qualifications and did not advance to playoff alliance competition, they left Saginaw with their heads high and their bonds stronger than ever.
Coach Schokora was recognized at the state level as a nominee for the Woody Flowers Award, which honors mentors and coaches who inspire students through gracious professionalism and dedication to the FIRST mission, a well-deserved nod to the culture he has helped build within the program.
Our team captain and junior at BHS, Sophina Runde, was named a State Finalist for the Leadership Award, the only individual student award in FIRST Robotics Competition, and will now advance to compete at the FIRST World Championship in Houston, TX in two weeks. Out of hundreds of student nominees across Michigan we are proud that one of our own received this award.
Sophina has been consistent in how she receives the recognition. "I wouldn't be here if it weren't for the love I have for this team," she said. "We call ourselves 'da family' and that's exactly what we are."
The achievement is the culmination of a season that held obstacles. We entered 2026 with no build room until one week before season kickoff, under new leadership, and navigating significant organizational changes driven largely by the students themselves.
"Da family" is just getting started.
