BAHA held its 51st Annual Membership Meeting and Dinner this evening at the beautifully restored Hillside Club. Aside from the business meeting and election of the Board of Directors, the program included two speakers.
John Caner of the Downtown Berkeley Association spoke about Old City Hall and the efforts to preserve and restore it
Paul Chapman, former Head Master of the Anna Head School spoke about the three historic endangered buildings on the site. Both speakers were very well received.
Those who ordered dinner enjoyed a buffet meal by Mediterraneo Catering.

A DOWNTOWN BANK.
This view is of the southwest corner of Shattuck and University avenues. The building is a 1964 remodel for San Francisco Federal Savings & Loan of a 1927 Bank of America. The building had been similar to the Bank of America at Durant and Telegraph, designed by the same architect, W. A. Minton.
The present building, with its grand styling, would be at home on Rodeo Drive.

BEFORE & AFTER IN THE ELMWOOD.
"Ozzie's" in 1982 and 2025.
The building was designed and built by John A. Bischoff in 1922. The oak-paneled drug store was there from the start until 1988. Ozzie's soda fountain counter remains as part of the interior of Baker & Common.

TILEWORK IN THE ELMWOOD.
The Cianciarulo Building is faced with glossy white tile. Panels and a frieze are delineated by small square, colorful tiles. This is one of the unique shop building designs in the Elmwood Commercial District. The building was designed in 1923 by architect A. W. Smith for Oaklander Battiste Cianciarulo. The Cianciarulo family continued to own the building for many years.

On May 24, 1907, the Berkeley Gazette reported that Fred Koerber had received a permit to build a two-story $7000 building at College and Ashby. This is the first building; it served as the nucleus for the present day Elmwood Commercial District.

A NEW AQUATIC.
In 2024 the sixth in the series of “Aquatic” apartment buildings, the Aquatic Ashby, was completed at 3006 San Pablo Avenue, corner of Ashby. Read Investments has built all the Aquatics. The Aquatic@U, at University and Milvia, has been previously featured on BAHA’s page. It contains a recreation of the Dutch Boy Mural by Berkeley artist Stefen.
Aquatic Ashby was designed by Trachtenberg Architects, now known as Stackhouse, de la Peña, Trachtenberg Architects. Aquatic Ashby comes across as substantial, and the building successfully anchors the corner of this wide, busy intersection.
The firm of Jett Landscape Architecture + Design created the landscaping, which includes roof gardens.

THE GAGE HOUSE ON ARCH.
This house is similar to the Derby Street house that was posted yesterday. The Annie Gage House was also designed and built by F. E. Armstrong, also in 1902. The differences between the two are that the entrance to the Gage House on Arch is on the side, and that the bay window on the Gage House is centered on the front and is much wider than the bay window on the Mills House on Derby.
Shingled houses are often quite plain, but they do not appear plain because the color and texture of the wood shingles give them extraordinary visual interest.
