In a milestone week for science and education, the University of California achieved an unprecedented feat — five Nobel Prizes awarded across physics, chemistry, medicine, and economics. The winners included researchers whose discoveries reshaped their fields, from quantum materials to the genetic code. This achievement not only cements UC’s position as a global leader in research but also underscores how decades of investment in public education continue to yield breakthroughs that change the world.

It’s not déjà vu, it’s a fact! For the second year in a row, UC Berkeley has been ranked the #1 public school in the U.S. by The Wall Street Journal’s 2026 Best Colleges list.

The Wall Street Journal’s rankings methodology is designed to measure the financial and career success of graduates. “Today’s ranking in the Wall Street Journal confirms Berkeley’s role as an extraordinary engine of economic mobility for many thousands of students every year,” said Chancellor Rich Lyons.

UC Berkeley is the #1 public university in the country, according to recent 2026 U.S. News & World Report rankings. ✨🐻

This is the 16th time over the past two decades that Berkeley has claimed the top spot in the annual U.S. News Best Colleges rankings. Berkeley has consistently been one of the highest-ranked public schools nationally since the magazine’s rankings began in 1983.

Berkeley is routinely recognized as the nation’s top public university, most recently in Forbes’ rankings of America’s Top Colleges and U.S. News’ Best Global Universities rankings. It also earned the distinction as the leading public university in North America in the QS World University Rankings 2026 and topped the PitchBook university rankings earlier this month for generating more startups founded by undergraduate alumni than any other university worldwide.

Berkeley bested Stanford, Harvard and MIT in the annual Pitchbook rankings, a testament to the campus's investments in innovation and entrepreneurship.
