Tomorrow kicks off our final concert series of the season! In the words of our Artistic Executive Director, Rebecca P.N. Seeman:

"I’m a nature-lover – I need my walks in the woods to feel healthy and whole and I tend to a large garden of veggies and fruit trees, so I am inclined toward environmental justice and climate activism. When I decided to focus this season, “Elements of Music,” on the four classical elements of water, fire, earth, and air, I thought I’d prioritize repertoire about climate change in all three concerts. As it turned out, the first two programs of the season – water in December and fire in February – had a few pieces about climate issues, but were not dominated by that subject. In our upcoming concert, “Terra ad Caelum: Songs of Land and Sky,” we delve deeply into works about connection with nature, its preciousness and fragility, and how our way of life depends on prioritizing the environment."

Not so long ago, Greenland was a hot topic in the dailies. We’re not talking about that. Here’s Greenland for us:

“We understand so little of the majesty around us,
even when we come to the places where one is alone with the world in silence.”
Simigaq, Ulugssat, Greenland
(Set to music by Karin Rehnqvist, Songs From the North)

Come hear voices from the high north come alive as we explore songs of air and earth.

Plant your feet on the ground and let your spirits soar to the sky with Sacred and Profane in May, as we sing songs of earth, wind, and air. We will celebrate Arvo Pärt’s 90th birthday with I Am the Vine, revel in Shawn Crouch’s evocative Marshland Elegy, and be comforted by Frank Ticheli’s compelling Earth Song. We will explore the globe with an Irish folk song and a Saami joik. We return to the Latvian composer Ēriks Ešenvalds with a work for choir, marimba, and wine glasses and to the Swedish composer Karin Rehnqvist with her Songs from the North, a setting of texts by indigenous Arctic Circle poets composed for the ensemble.
