Asian American and Pacific Islander Health Research Group

Asian American and Pacific Islander Health Research Group We're Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders dedicated to helping our communities through research and social activism! Check us out!

We are a group of San Francisco Bay Area health professionals and UC Berkeley undergraduates/alumni. In 2008, 42% of students on campus were Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI), yet there was not a single academic course devoted to the study of health in the AAPI communities. Thus, the AAPI Health Research Group was formed in 2008 to fill this void. We have been conducting classes (AAS/ASAMST 9

8/198) listed under the Asian American Studies Department since 2008 until 2020, when we held our first official 4-unit class, ASAMST 190: "Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Community Health: Foundational Theories & Contemporary Issues" taught by Joe Lee, MSHA. The purpose of this website is to share our journey and findings in AAPI community health with other students and community professionals who may wish to join us or contribute to the work. There are many national health advocacy agencies as well as local community health service providers. We attempt to bring the expertise of these frontline professionals and organizations to undergraduate students. At the same time, we plan to develop a research grid that will highlight areas of needed research. We hope this research grid will provide ideas and impetus for student research. Although the aggregate data for our community paint a picture of a healthy population, we know that good health is not enjoyed by all. Our community is not homogeneous. The diversity of the many ethnic groups that make up the AAPI community presents challenges in obtaining accurate data. Students who come from these diverse background can be an important conduit in raising our awareness of health problems that exist in these communities. This can foster a deeper understanding of health in the AAPI community.

"Hello everyone! My name is Michelle Yiu, and I am a fourth-year undergraduate student at UC Berkeley studying Public Health with a minor in Asian American and Asian Diaspora Studies. This fall semester, I have been given the opportunity to conduct my own research project as a Cohort 14 researcher of the Asian American and Pacific Islander Health Research Group (AAPIHRG). AAPIHRG is an organization that strives to improve the health of Asian American and Pacific Islander communities through research, community service, and social activism.

I am currently conducting a study on how social determinants of health, especially working conditions, limited English proficiency, and wage theft, impact the health outcomes of restaurant workers in urban Chinatowns. The main purpose of the survey is to investigate the relationship between working conditions and health outcomes for restaurant workers in urban Chinatowns to better understand how to possibly improve working conditions impacting workers’ health. The results from the study will be open to the public and presented virtually on Zoom on Tuesday, November 23rd 6:00pm PT.

If you identify as a restaurant worker in an urban Chinatown, please support my study by taking the survey below. To everyone else, please share this with any Chinatown restaurant worker that you may know.

The survey will close on Tuesday, November 16th 5:00 pm PT.

Shared from Joan Shim, one of our Cohort 14 researchers & facilitators:

"Hello everyone! I am exploring the perception and awareness of tuberculosis (TB) in UC Berkeley students within the Asian American (AA) Pacific Islander (PI) community because there is high burden of TB in the AAPI community and many survivors are diagnosed around the time that they are students. However, TB is not commonly studied in student demographics.

If you are a UC Berkeley student and identify as Asian American and/or Pacific Islander, please consider taking the survey below. This survey should take about 15 minutes, and participants will be given the option to be entered in a raffle to win a $25 dollar gift card!
