Greetings!

Thank you to everyone who attended our UCBAA meeting earlier this month. It was really nice to see familiar faces and meet newer alumni. Thanks also to those who showed interest in joining the revitalization effort in whatever capacity you’re able to. Whether that’s serving on the Board or not, if we each play a small role, we can ensure that the UCBAA is strong and that the Armenian Studies Program is not compromised.

As mentioned at the meeting, our next virtual meeting will be on Tuesday, December 6th at 7pm via Zoom. Our primary goal is to hold elections at this meeting.

Please find the zoom link below and join us!

Looking forward to seeing you soon,

The Interim Team

ANNOUNCEMENT: Dr. Stephan Astourian's Retirement: Save the Date MAY 1 & Video Tribute

Dear Cal alumni and friends of the ASP,

After teaching at UC Berkeley for nearly 25 years and building the Armenian Studies Program into a full-fledged, degree-granting program, our Executive Director, Dr. Stephan Astourian, is retiring at the end of this semester. Before saying farewell to him, Cal's ASA and Armenian Alumni plan to honor Dr. Astourian's career at a reception to be held on Sunday, May 1 at the Alumni House on campus. Invitations are forthcoming, but please mark your calendar in the meantime.

As part of the program for this event, we are preparing a video tribute with contributions from former and current students. We invite you to help us make this collective tribute by submitting a short video recording of yourself sharing your experiences as Dr. Astourian’s student. In order to do so, you might answer one or more of the following questions:

1) Recount a memorable interaction you’ve had with Dr. Astourian.
2) As we all know, Dr. Astourian has a way with words. Are there any phrases he’s used or statements he’s made that you recall being particularly interesting, funny, or powerful?
3) What was it like being in Dr. Astourian’s class(es)?
4) If you had to mention the single most important thing Dr. Astourian taught you, what would it be?
5) Is there anything you’d like to say to him as he leaves Cal and moves on to the next phase of his career?

These are just some possibilities. Feel free to share anything you’d like him to know.

And here are the technical guidelines for submissions:
Record on any electronic device, even your cellular phone;
When you record, make sure to orient your device horizontally;
The room should be quiet;
The light source in the room, such as the window, should not be behind you;
Once the recording is complete, please upload the video to this google drive folder: tinyurl.com/astourianvideotribute
We ask that submissions be made by Friday, April 1.
Finally, please forward this message to anyone you think would be interested in participating, and write to me with any questions you have. I look forward to hearing from many of you!

With best wishes,
Myrna Douzjian
