As we begin our spring semester, we would like to introduce our Executive Director of Curriculum of the school year - Devan Mathur! Amid COVID-19 and the changing policies of SAT, Devan has not only united the team, but also led the team to adapt and change accordingly to best serve our high school students. Let's see what he has to say:

Name: Devan Mathur
Year: Senior
Hometown: Fremont, CA
Major: Molecular and Cell Biology, Education Minor

How has PTPS changed you?

Before my involvement with People's Test Preparation Services, I was just another tutor at a for-profit SAT Prep center, trying my best to help students of privilege, like me, to understand the test while making some pocket change for college. But my time in my organization has reminded me that knowledge is not something to be hoarded or commodified. I've valued my time in PTPS as my way of sharing the cultural capital I have gained through my privilege, giving insight not only into the SAT, but also into understanding the college admissions process. COVID has brought challenges to our ability to serve, but it has reminded us of just how important our resources are to those challenged by financial hardship or facing the disproportionate brunt of the pandemic. If our resources can play just a small part in helping these students break barriers, then it will have been worth it.

Reminder, our application to become a teacher is due on Jan 31st 11:59pm :)

PTPS Teacher Spotlight is back!

Name: Joy Yip
Year: Sophomore
Hometown: Hong Kong
Major: Intended Business & Economics
Position: Recruitment Coordinator / Verbal Teacher

Why did you join PTPS?
I came across PTPS during my first semester at Cal as a freshman when I was actively looking for volunteering opportunities. When I saw PTPS, I resonated deeply with their mission of leveraging the unequal playing field in higher education. Personally, I know that I wouldn’t have gone to Cal if I didn’t have the privilege of taking private SAT classes, which helped me raised over 200 points on the SAT. It frustrates me that many students are not able to take advantage of these resources due to financial constraints. I hope to utilize the knowledge that I’ve gained from my SAT experience to help those who are at a disadvantage to achieve their full potential, with the greater goal of bridging the gap in higher education and challenging the biased system.

Fun Fact?
Over winter break, I traveled to Taiwan for less than 40 hours just to taste a cup of authentic boba!

Read about our teacher spotlight with Isabella Chien, one of our Executive Directors for fall 2019!

When I first joined PTPS, I was looking for something fun to do that also impacted my surrounding community. Teaching high schoolers who want to learn more and have big plans for their future seemed like a simple win-win situation, but little did I know that I would actually fall in love with this organization and its purpose. The people committed to this org are amazing - everyone's true intention is to help each other improve the program for both our SAT teachers here at Berkeley and our dedicated high school students. One of the highlights of my PTPS experiences was when my students told me how much they appreciated my teaching and how all the work we put in had given them a chance to succeed on their exam. It's always amazing to see how all the efforts our students make pay off when they finally understand a difficult concept. Working with my fellow teachers and our students has been an exceptional opportunity that has allowed me to grow through helping others.

Happy Friday!

Read about why our recent alum, Brian, decided to stay with PTPS for over 6 semesters.

I joined PTPS because a friend actually recruited me. I never thought I would fall in love with teaching, but I did. The friends that I made and relationships I had with the students kept bringing me back every semester. Definitely one of the best clubs I joined during my time at Cal and one of the most underrated clubs on campus. I really am going to miss it!
