Here’s a summary of the latest situation at Mt. Mayon:
Current Volcanic Status
As of late May 2026, Mayon Volcano has been in continuous eruption for over 141 consecutive days, having started its current eruptive phase in early January 2026. PHIVOLCS reports that Alert Level 3 (intensified magmatic unrest) remains in effect, and entry into the 6-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone is prohibited.
Daily activity includes:
• Incandescent lava flows along the Bonga, Basud, and Mi-isi gullies
• Collapse-fed pyroclastic density currents (PDCs), locally called “uson”
• Rockfalls and intermittent minor Strombolian explosive bursts
Unusual Sighting — Meteor Near Mayon
On the night of May 25, PHIVOLCS cameras at Ligñon Hill captured a green fireball/meteor streaking near the volcano. It was initially thought to have struck the slopes, but PHIVOLCS confirmed it disintegrated in the atmosphere and did not impact the mountain — a relief, as such an impact could have been equivalent to 7,500 tons of dynamite. Affected Population & Victims
The human toll since January has been significant, though no direct eruption fatalities have been reported:
• Over 52,590 families (199,367 persons) affected across 124 barangays in Albay by May 5, per the NDRRMC[sunstar]
• A major surge on May 2–3 pushed 5,400+ people into evacuation centers after a lava collapse triggered massive ash plumes reaching nearly 10,000 feet, affecting 91,000+ residents in Guinobatan and surrounding areas[people]
• 41 barangays blanketed in thick ash; livestock deaths were reported in Camalig
• Some 88 indigenous Agta-Tabangnon families in high-risk zones required special government response
• 88 affected IP (indigenous peoples) families were flagged for immediate protection by NCIP
Government Assistance
The DSWD (Department of Social Welfare and Development) has distributed over ₱117 million in aid, including food packs, hygiene kits, emergency cash transfers of more than ₱10,000 per family, and a cash-for-work program. The Office of the Vice President also conducted relief operations in mid-May distributing food, blankets, sleeping mats, and other essentials.[gmanetwork]
President Marcos ordered immediate mobilization of government agencies to assist affected communities.
The situation remains active and ongoing — PHIVOLCS continues daily monitoring and the danger zone remains enforced.
