Helping Restore Julia Morgan’s Historic Pool Windows at the Berkeley City Club
As this years Art Deco Society of California's Miss Art Deco, I am proud to launch my legacy preservation project in support of the Berkeley City Club Conservancy’s historic pool window restoration. Through this project, I hope to inspire others to join me in celebrating and preserving the architectural heritage of the Art Deco era.
Opened in 1930 as the Berkeley Women’s City Club, this landmark gave women a place to gather for cultural, social, athletic and philanthropic activities. Designed by Julia Morgan, California’s first licensed woman architect, it blends Romanesque and Moorish architecture and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, National Park Service.
Morgan’s extraordinary attention to craftsmanship shines throughout the building, especially in its magnificent indoor pool. After decades of moisture and chlorine exposure, the original steel window frames deteriorated and cracked the surrounding concrete. The original leaded glass with its diamond pattern was also replaced with industrial glazing.
The restoration will recreate 20 windows and two doors, returning Morgan’s original design through traditional leaded glass craftsmanship while meeting modern building codes.
