Seeking experienced sailors to volunteer on Pegasus! Ahoy Bay Area, we are Pegasus Voyages, a long established non profit operating out of the Berkeley Marina. Over the last 31 years, we've taken upwards of 27,000 Bay Area youth out sailing on our classic Alden designed, cutter rigged ketch 'Pegasus'. We are a volunteer based non profit, deeply committed to our mission of exposing underserved youth to the wonders of sailing on SF Bay. We are actively seeking sailors of diverse backgrounds to join us as volunteer crew as we gear up for the busy fall season. Please check out our website to find out more about who we are and what we do: https://pegasusvoyages.org/
If interested in volunteering with us, fill out the volunteer crew application here: https://pegasusvoyages.org/volunteer/
Cheers and happy sailing!

The sun ☀️ came out in defiance of the cloudy and rainy forecasts, giving us two sparkly ✨ sails with 6th graders from Willard Middle School. For some students, it was their first time on a boat; others had visited Pegasus as 5th graders and were excited to be back.

We also welcomed a new member to our crew who instantly became a kid-whisperer, helping nervous students find their courage and make it out onto the bowsprit.

A mix of first-time sailors, returning students, and fresh faces on our crew made the whole day shine in ways the weather forecasts had not predicted.

One student summed up the day perfectly: “Majestic.”

During two back-to-back voyages with a class from Washington Elementary, we experienced several memorable moments. One child had been waiting two years for her turn since her brother sailed with us, and she made the most of it, from sitting out on the bowsprit to taking the helm.

Another student started the day reluctant to go out on the bowsprit. Captain Bob told him he didn’t have to, but that he could change his mind anytime. After steering the ship himself and seeing his classmates’ joy, he decided to give it a try and loved it.

As we returned to the docks, a seal appeared in the fairway as if to greet us, the perfect ending to a majestic day.

Last week, a returning guest who’s pursuing his GED at the Berkeley Adult School surprised us by sharing a lengthy story. We’ve known him as a very quiet young man of few words but always the first to go up on the bowsprit. When he finished, his teacher said “That’s the most words we’ve ever heard you speak!”

It was a moment several of our returning volunteer crew members will remember for a while. 🫶

From the bowsprit to the helm, these 5th graders from Thousand Oaks Elementary got the full sailing ⛵️ experience.

Thanks to our volunteers, donors, and supportive community, kids can discover confidence and new perspectives on the Bay.
