In April, the entire school community at West Hillsborough Elementary School in Hillsborough hosted a Project Good Earth Marketplace fundraiser to support KIDS for the BAY’s Watershed Education Programs. Each grade made and sold homemade items, including baked goods and craft projects, to help raise funds to support KftB. The West Hillsborough School Community raised a total of $4,019 in support of our work.

“We wanted to find an environmental organization that worked with kids. We love everything about KIDS for the BAY. Your work aligned so well with the values and initiatives we were looking to support,” shared Allison Hasenkamp, a West Parent Group board member and Co-Chair of Project Good Earth, West Hillsborough Elementary’s service learning program.

Thank you, West Hillsborough Elementary, for supporting our student Environmentalists and watershed stewards! 🌱

Through our partnership with , students from Nystrom Elementary embarked on an unforgettable bus field trip to explore bay shoreline habitats at Keller Beach in Richmond. Students investigated the intertidal zone and discovered organisms that live on the rocky shore, including beach hoppers, acorn barnacles and green shore crabs. The Nystrom Environmentalists also identified local and native plants, such as coyote bush and coast live oak, played nature games, and spent a quiet moment mapping the natural soundscape at Keller Beach.

The KIDS for the BAY Staff Team had a blast at our annual Teaching in the Outdoors Training! We loved exploring the tide pools at Muir Beach, where we discovered sea stars, giant green anemones, hermit crabs and limpets! Our KftB Educators identified and cataloged native and local plants at Muir Beach to share with our KftB students during their spring field trips to bay and ocean habitats. To wrap up the day’s events, the KftB Staff Team hiked along the cliffs at Muir Beach for some coastal scenery and a view of the Farallon Islands!

Swipe to see some stunning sea stars! 🌟

At Piedmont Elementary in Oakland, KftB students engaged in a scientific experiment to learn more about the harmful impacts of carbon dioxide emissions and ocean acidification on shelled organisms. Students built a Tiny Ocean using bromothymol blue (an acid-base indicator), baking soda and vinegar to replicate and observe the process of carbon dioxide diffusion into a liquid, resulting in increased acidity. They also had the opportunity to observe shells impacted by elevated levels of carbonic acid in the ocean.

Through this exciting, hands-on experiment, the young scientists observed the rippling impacts that ocean acidification can have on marine ecosystems and the communities who depend on them.
