We are honored to celebrate Miss Bobbie Wakefield, founder of Project Loving Life, who was recently honored with an ICON Award from CBS San Francisco. 💛

Over the years, Project Loving Life has contributed more than $100,000 to WCRC’s Sister to Sister Program, and her commitment has helped the program remain a steady source of connection for those it serves.

In August, we welcomed Miss Wakefield and the KPIX news team to our Center for an interview about her impact. Dolores Moorehead, our Community Engagement Director and Sister to Sister facilitator, was also interviewed, along with one of our clients. The segment aired in September, and we are so proud of how it shows the heart of this community.

Compassionate care changes everyone it touches, including the people who give it. 💛

Angélica González started at WCRC as a volunteer in 2020, making check in calls and helping clients in Spanish. Today she’s one of our patient navigators, and she gets to see how much those first calls mean to the people on the other end.

Her time at WCRC has shaped where she’s headed next: primary care, where she hopes to be the first face a patient sees.

“This work has been incredibly fulfilling,” she says.

Jamie Elmasu, Director of Community Health Improvement at John Muir Health Foundation shares why their team has partnered with WCRC for more than six years. Their grant funding supports our free mental health services for adults with low incomes and without insurance, and helps build a more representative mental health workforce through training opportunities.

Today is Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day. In a new op-ed for the WCRC newsletter, Gilead Foundation President Jane Stafford reminds us that treating cancer and caring for a person living with cancer are not the same thing.

A metastatic diagnosis touches nearly every part of life, and no two experiences are alike. Through a Gilead Foundation–supported partnership, WCRC and Charlotte Maxwell Clinic are working to connect low-income people living with metastatic breast cancer across the East Bay to the support they need, so no one has to navigate it alone.

As Jane writes, whole-person care shouldn’t be an aspiration. It should be the expectation.

The City of Berkeley hosted “Fall into Wellness,” its Senior Wellness Fair held on Friday, 10/2. Drawing more than 300 attendees and 30+ organizations, it was a triumphant return for an event that had been shuttered because of COVID-19. The Women’s Cancer Resource Center was there to share information on its free resources with attendees, who were also treated to a performance by the Tap Dance Club and a Zumba demonstration.

Katherine Brown, Director of the South Berkeley Senior Center shared remarks of appreciation for all who made the event possible. We are grateful to the senior centers for their indispensable service!

Thank you to everyone who came out to Good Tunes for a Great Cause last Saturday! Saint Mary Magdalen Church in Berkeley was filled with live music, dancing, and so many familiar and new faces coming together in support of the Women’s Cancer Resource Center.

A special thank you to all the friends of WCRC who helped make the evening possible and joined us on the dance floor. Together, we raised over $4,300 for WCRC’s free cancer support services, with more still coming in.

Every contribution helps make sure people facing cancer in our community can access patient navigation, emotional support, wellness programs, and more at no cost.

One week away! On Saturday, October 17, Allen Temple Baptist Church in Oakland will host the Prostate Cancer 2500 Care Summit from 10 AM to 2 PM.

This free event is a chance to get a prostate cancer screening, talk with medical experts, hear from survivors, and learn about nutrition and wellness. Bring your questions, invite a friend, or share this with someone who could benefit.

We hope you’ll help us spread the word to the fathers, partners, brothers, and friends in our community.

The summit is presented with a wide network of Bay Area partners, including UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center, Stanford Medicine Cancer Center, Alameda County Health, and 100 Black Men of the Bay Area.

Roxana has taken part in WCRC's wellness classes since her diagnosis. The free weekly meals prepared by our partners at Dandelion Kitchen have helped support her household through treatment and beyond. Here's what she shared with us:

Español:
“Agradezco a Dandelion Kitchen y los donadores de la comida por la ayuda que proporcionan a todas las participantes que nos beneficiamos a través de los diferentes programas de WCRC. Desde mi diagnóstico he participado en clases de bienestar que me han ayudado a navegar los cambios que el cáncer ha causado en mi vida, incluso después de terminar mi tratamiento. Debido a los efectos secundarios no he podido trabajar, y el apoyo con alimentos ha sido una gran ayuda para la economía de mi hogar, que actualmente depende de un solo ingreso. Los alimentos que recibimos son de buena calidad y apoyan nuestra alimentación y recuperación durante las diferentes etapas que vivimos con el cáncer.”

English (translated):
“I am grateful to Dandelion Kitchen and the food donors for the support they provide to all of us who benefit through the different WCRC programs. Since my diagnosis, I have participated in wellness classes that have helped me navigate the changes cancer has caused in my life, even after finishing treatment.
