STAFF HIGHLIGHT #3: Isabelle Charles

At Center for Emerging and Neglected Diseases - CEND at UC Berkeley, none of our initiatives or projects would run smoothly or happen without our project manager Isabelle Charles! Read her testimony below:

"I love working at CEND because I love being part of a multidisciplinary, collaborative team. Being able to work with faculty, students and staff across Departments - whether it's Berkeley Bioengineering, Berkeley Public Health or Rausser College of Natural Resources - UC Berkeley - there's always an opportunity for exciting discussion and innovation. Whether it's waking up at 6 AM to get on a phone call with my colleagues (and friends) in Uganda, or staying up past 10 PM discussing over dinner the future of molecular diagnostics and strategies to combat antibiotic resistance, every moment with CEND has been an exciting moment to learn and share."

STAFF HIGHLIGHT #2: Eddie Wehri

At Center for Emerging and Neglected Diseases - CEND, we can't talk about CEND-sponsored research without highlighting our own, in-house scientist Eddie Wehri, the High Throughput Screening Scientist on staff who was brought on to set up the small molecule HTS screening lab to promote translational research here at UC Berkeley. Together with other staff members, Eddie has over 20 years of industry experience. Read his testimony below!

"Berkeley is a fantastic institution of higher learning and basic science but it can be difficult to translate that science into real world applications. That is where we come into play. We have set up a lab that can quickly and inexpensively find small molecules to modulate targets of interest and hopefully cure or ameliorate many rare and neglected diseases as well as other targets of interest."

MHIRT Alum Highlight #2: Krupa Modi!

At CEND, we love inspiring participants of our initiatives such as MHIRT (UC Berkeley Minority Health/Global Health Disparities Research Fellowship) to think critically about the research that they're doing.

One alum of MHIRT, Krupa Modi (B.A. Public Health '19), details her takeaways from the MHIRT Fellowship below:

"I loved being directly involved in global health field work, engaging with community members and learning what community-based work looks like in another country. I also found it interesting to learn about the challenges and realities of taking bilateral approaches in global health, particularly in terms of how global health research is funded."

STAFF HIGHLIGHT #1: Celine Perier

At CEND, we work AND play hard. Celine Perier, a CEND staff member who develops grant proposals to take advantage of funding opportunities so CEND can continue its long-term mission, talks about her experience at CEND below:

"I started working at CEND a few months ago. Since then, I’ve enjoyed every day of the work. Not only is the work interesting and satisfying, but my coworkers are awesome. A few days after I started working, I found myself singing karaoke in a room full of researchers, and since then, my journey at CEND has been full of surprises; from meeting incredible scientists to having a snake around my neck!”
