NCLC represents Witches and Wiccans in northern California. COG (The Covenant of the Goddess) is one of the largest and oldest Wiccan religious organizations, with members in North America, Europe and Australia. owing religion in the United States. It practitioners are reviving ancient Pagan practices and beliefs of pre-Christian Europe and adapting them to contemporary life. The result is a religion that is both old and new, both 'traditional' and creative. From August 13 to 15, ancient Romans celebrated Nemoralia by honoring the goddess Diana as the fierce protector and ultimate champion of women. During this sacred mid-August festival, women walked in torchlight processions to her holy sanctuary at Lake Nemi to seek her divine grace and blessings. They washed their hair, wore crowns of woven flowers, and tied personal prayers on ribbons to the branches of her sacred grove. As a guardian of the vulnerable, Diana offered safety, healing, and freedom during this time, granting a rare day of rest to enslaved people and forbidding all hunting in her woods.
