Recently, one of EBCLC’s clients was kidnapped outside his home by ICE and taken to a detention center almost six hours away. Once EBCLC was finally able to communicate with our client, we obtained his permission to contact his church and other community members for help. Friends and fellow church members rallied behind him to provide emotional and material support.

EBCLC was able to secure our client’s release from detention, and his community’s support was absolutely essential to this legal victory.

This is a reminder that each one of us plays an important role in this ecosystem of resistance. Please make a gift to EBCLC today and support community lawyering that strengthens the resilience of our communities in this critical time: ebclc.org/donate

For Simone, homelessness is always on her mind. As a social worker, she supports homeless individuals who are medically frail, and as a tenant, she’s had to fight against her own eviction for several years.

Simone moved into her home 14 years ago with her two children and her elderly father. When the landlord passed away, the home went into foreclosure and was eventually purchased by a bank. The bank refused to accept rent payments from Simone and moved to evict her and her family, claiming that she was not a tenant despite a decade of tenancy. EBCLC’s Housing and Homelessness Advocacy Program stepped in to help Simone get her eviction case dismissed.

Now, Simone brings her experience facing homelessness to her work with her clients. “It gives me strength and empathy. And it keeps me humble knowing that what my clients have gone through could have easily happened to me if I hadn’t had EBCLC by my side.”

Donna came to EBCLC after losing her social security income, which she depends on to survive. As a lifelong advocate for domestic violence survivors, renters, and people with reduced mobility, Donna always showed up for her community, even while navigating challenges in her own life. Still, as the administration slashes away at the social safety net, Donna couldn’t save herself from falling through the cracks it’s created.

After months of advocacy and with Donna’s own persistence, our Health and Economic Security program was able to reinstate Donna’s critical SSI benefits. Now, Donna guides people from her community to EBCLC’s services.

Donna is a testament to how community-centered lawyering reinforces the resiliency that already exists in our communities, especially in people like Donna. In her own words: “The system is broken but it won’t break me.”

EBCLC is proud to support SB 1422 – the Medi-Cal Access Restoration Act.

SB 1422 restores access to Medi-Cal by ending the enrollment freeze for our immigrant neighbors and ensuring communities across California can get the care they need.

Join us in calling on the Senate Health Committee to support SB 1422 at tomorrow’s hearing.

TAKE ACTION: Flock Safety jeopardizes the privacy of Berkeley residents, violates sanctuary contract terms, and endangers our immigrant neighbors, all while failing to significantly reduce crime. Tell Berkeley City Council to REJECT expanding its contract with Flock.

We need your help to raise $10,000 for an emergency fund for our immigrant clients! At the start of the year, USCIS dramatically increased immigration filing fees, essentially creating a “pay-to-play" system for immigrants. Some filing fees have increased from $100 to over $1,000, which is simply unaffordable for our low-income clients. EBCLC has begun to pay these filing fees on behalf of our clients, but we are rapidly exhausting our already limited resources to do so.

You can make a real difference for our work and the immigrant clients we serve – please consider making a donation to this emergency fund. Donate here: https://ebclc.org/support/donate/
