On Wednesday, August 26, 2026 (12:30 PM PT), Dr. Lewis Feldman, Director of the University of California Botanical Garden at Berkeley, presents "𝐁𝐞𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐲’𝐬 𝐔𝐧𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐓𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞: 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐔𝐂 𝐁𝐨𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐆𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐧."

Dr. Feldman will take us on a virtual tour of the garden, located on the UC Berkeley campus. He'll discuss the history of the garden and its role in research, teaching, and conservation. Given the pressing need to adapt to climate change, Dr. Feldman will also discuss how the garden is supporting campus priorities to address societal health and well-being.

On August 9, the six BARSHEEP clubs of Rotary District 5160 hosted Care and Share, bringing together Rotarians and guests for an afternoon in support of RotaCare West Contra Costa Free Clinic.

The event paid special tribute to Berkeley Rotarian Dr. Pate Thomson, founding physician of RotaCare WCC, with music, personal reflections, and recognition of his extraordinary service, including commendations from elected leaders.

One of the most moving moments was a testimonial from Sharda Parajuli, who contracted polio as a child and received care and new leg braces through the clinic.

The fundraising results were remarkable: more than $120,000 was raised in sponsorships before the event, with tickets, pledges, raffles, and other contributions adding more than $50,000 on the day. A final total will be announced once outstanding pledges are received.

The event was the result of nine months of planning, collaboration, and generosity, including the volunteer efforts of over 75 BARSHEEP Rotarians. Thank you to everyone who contributed time, talent, sponsorships, donations, and enthusiasm to make Care & Share possible.

📅 On Wednesday, August 12, 2026, Rotarian Michael Mendonça and his wife, Janet, will present “The LN4 Prosthetic Hand Project.”

LN-4 Prosthetic Hands help restore function and independence for people who have experienced limb loss due to trauma, illness, or congenital limb differences. Michael and Janet will update us on the project's continuing impact and next steps.

Can it be that time already? Next week (on August 12), Berkeley public school students will head back to their classrooms.

The Berkeley Schools Volunteers has put out a call for volunteers to help distribute textbooks at Berkeley High School (this week), staff the school resource fair this Saturday (funded in part by Berkeley Rotary), deliver groceries to Berkeley families, and help stock school pantries (ongoing).
