We finished up our Israel unit this week! We designed creations in Bonim based on different styles of Israeli architecture and used different materials to create found art in the style of Israeli artist Hanoch Piven. In chugim, we played Israeli games, and made Israeli salad with מְלָפְפוֹן (cucumber), עַגְבָנִיָה (tomato), מֶלַח (salt), a little bit of שׁוּם (garlic), and some juice from a לִימוֹן (lemon). We also made טְחִינָה (tahini)! We also learned about this week's parasha, Emor, and thought about what it means for something to be considered קָדוֹשׁ (holy). We added some pictures of holy things to the art Torah we've been creating all year!

We had such a great Yom HaAtzma'ut celebration this week! We ate Israeli food at Misada, with פִּתָּה (pita), חוּמוּס (hummus), סָלָט (Israeli salad), and זֵיתִים (olives). We played Hebrew games, created our own innovations and Israeli symbols in Bonim, listened to Israeli music and guessed which cities the songs were about, and learned Israeli dances. We earned שְׁקָלִים (shekels) at different Mavoh stations and used them to buy special Israeli treats, including בִּיסְלִי (Bisli) and לִימוֹנָדָה (lemonade). We also got to make (and eat) our own pita and cook it on the fire pit!

We celebrated Purim with an all-day carnival! We solved riddles, took photos in a photo booth, played Purim matching games, got our faces painted, made רַעֲשָׁנִים (groggers/noisemakers), bounced in a bouncy house, and more! Participating in different stations earned us coins, which will be donated to a charity chosen by the Bogrim (since they earned the most coins as a group!) to fulfill the mitzvah of מַתָּנוֹת לָאֶבְיוֹנִים (Matanot La'Evyonim, gifts for the less fortunate). It was such a fun day and week of celebration!

It's almost Purim! This week we started baking אָזְנֵי הַמָּן (hamantaschen). We rolled out the dough, cut circles, filled the middle with chocolate chips, pinched the corners, and sent them off to the oven. Next week, we will continue to bake more, and all the kids will each receive a מִשְׁלוֹחַ מָנוֹת (Mishloach Manot) gift bag with some yummy treats inside, including אָזְנֵי הַמָּן! We spent this week decorating the bags and will exchange them with friends next week.

This week we started our Purim unit! All of our students started learning about the story, mitzvot, and traditions of Purim. The Garinim and 1st graders started coloring the Purim characters to make stick puppets, and the 2nd and 3rd graders turned a corner of the room into Shushan and made Debla, a delicious Sephardic dessert for Purim!

We also sang lots of songs for Purim, including our very fun Nahafochu song (based on the Hebrew phrase וְנַהֲפ֣וֹךְ ה֔וּא from Megillat Esther, which describes how Haman's plan for the Jews was flipped and the opposite happened, with Haman as the victim instead. Plus, some of our Bogrim volunteered to help lead our Torah service during Ma'agal on Thursday!

Shabbat shalom! This week, we created lots of different kinds of trees. The first graders created family trees, the Garinim used scrap paper and recycled materials to create their own tree artwork, and both groups made edible trees, too! In Omanut, we made drawings of different kinds of fruit, labeled them in Hebrew, and sorted them between מָתוֹק (sweet) and חָמוּץ (sour). We learned the Hebrew names for lots of different fruits, including בָּנָנָה (banana), עֲנָבִים (grapes), מַנְגּוֹ (mango), אֻכְמָנִיּוֹת (blueberries), and more! Plus, in our Cooking Around the World chug, we made shakshuka. The kids were involved in every step of the process, from chopping veggies to cracking eggs to grinding spices with a mortar and pestle!

Shabbat shalom! This week for Tu B'Shvat, the second and third graders visited the farmer's market and learned about how different fruits grow. The Kindergarten and first graders went on a Tree Trip where we walked to Live Oak Park and identified the different types of trees we saw along the way. Then, we drew our own trees with the same qualities that we observed!
