BUILD mentors provide extra, individualized support to struggling readers so they can build the foundational reading skills needed to succeed in school. BUILD mentors work at all 11 public elementary schools in Berkeley, 8 Berkeley community organizations or summer programs, and 6 elementary schools in Oakland. Mentor teams are managed by Cal student site Directors, who bridge communication betwee
n the school day and afterschool. Directors work with daytime Literacy Coaches to identify children for tutoring. They then organize mentoring schedules in collaboration with afterschool staff. Most BUILD mentors are paid an hourly wage through Work Study. Our Work Study partnership allows Cal students with high financial need to earn money for their own education while supporting the learning of local youth. Unpaid tutors can earn Education field study units for their service. All tutors participate in a full-day orientation and attend trainings led by literacy specialists and program staff throughout the semester.
