Daily Cal Archives 🗞
Ever wonder what reporting looked like decades ago❓

We're taking a look back at our archives, including this incredible photo from alumnus Mike Lovas '68. He took this photo while working at the Daily Cal in 1967 and shared this about the recollection:

“From January 1967 to October 1967 the number of military personnel in Vietnam went from about 385,000 to about 480,000, with thousands of draft inductions taking place every week.

Activists against the war declared the week of Oct. 16 as “Stop the Draft Week.” On Oct. 16, I was covering a march of about 3,000 people for the Daily Cal as a photographer. I marched with the protestors down Telegraph Avenue in Berkeley to the Clay Street Federal Induction Center in Oakland.

Among the more than 120 protestors arrested that day for blocking the building’s entrance was Joan Baez. The first day of the protest had little violence but as the week went on, police used clubs and mace to clear the streets of protestors.

The protest did little to stop the draft but is considered one of the major anti-war protests of 1967.”

‼️👀 Game Day Tailgates: Looking for a Grill Master 👀‼️

This fall, we’re planning to host tailgate parties for Daily Cal staff and alumni on Sproul Plaza ahead of all home Cal football games!

This is a great opportunity for you to centralize your game day plans alongside student reporters and fans, including, dare we say, elements of the Calgorithm.

Daily Cal staff will be live-hawking game day issues of the print paper and staffing the grill.

We could also use your help with grilling: We need a grill and a grill master to serve up fresh hot dogs and burgers to the hungry crowds. Let us know if you have a grill and can bring it to Sproul on game days! 🌟🌟

💙 Former managing editor and current board member Matt Brown, ’24, will be acting as a student-alumni envoy, so if you’d like to help, let Matt ([email protected]) or Aarya ([email protected]) know!

Coming Soon: Cal plays UCLA in a classic Pac-12 after-dark brawl on Sept. 5. Game starts at 7:30 pm. See you there!

🎉 Our first-ever Berkeley Angle Summer Journalism Camp was a huge success!

The first session of The Berkeley Angle, the Daily Cal’s summer camp for high school students, was a big success! This week we’ve begun our second session, with the program at maximum capacity.

“I learned so much from this camp. ... I would definitely do it again if I was given the chance,” said a participant in our first session.

Led by our own staff, we’re teaching the fundamentals of news reporting and opinion writing, in addition to law and ethics and the use of AI in journalism.

You can read some of the stories that our students wrote, including a profile of a local vegan restaurant and reporting on federal cuts threatening programs such as UC Berkeley’s California Language Archive.

We're incredibly proud of our staff for mentoring the next generation of journalists and expanding the Daily Cal's impact beyond campus.

Game Day Tailgates 🐻🌟

As we head into football season, we'd love to reconnect with our alumni community! We're planning game day tailgates on Sproul Plaza before every home Cal football game and are looking for alumni who can help make them a success. We could use your help with grilling: We need a grill and a grill master to serve up fresh hot dogs and burgers to the hungry crowds. Let us know if you have a grill and can bring it to Sproul on game days!

Do you know any high schoolers looking to jumpstart their journalism careers?

➡️ “I learned so much from this camp…. I would definitely do it again if I was given the chance,” said one student after attending our first session of The Berkeley Angle, The Daily Californian’s summer camp for high school students.

The Daily Californian's high school summer camp, The Berkeley Angle, is back for Session B, which will take place July 27-July 31, 9am-1pm remotely! If you know a talented student, whether they are your own child, a relative, or a mentee, this is their chance to learn from current DC staff and connect with our incredible alumni network. 🐻💙💛

🌟This one-week, fully remote course is open to all high school students who will gain firsthand insight into how an independent news outlet is run, learn daily reporting skills and also hear from alumni who are now working at newspapers nationwide, including the Los Angeles Times and the San Francisco Chronicle.
At the conclusion of the week, all students can report and write a story under the one-on-one guidance of our editors, to be published on The Daily Californian’s website.

▶️ “You get a chance to explore all areas of journalism, from types of reporting to career pathways and more,” said another student. “Whether it's through nailing down the structure and flow of a good article or a lecture on legal reporting, you will get a much better sense of and confidence in journalism by participating.”
