If Marilyn Monroe were alive today, she would be celebrating her 100th birthday. More than six decades after her death, she remains one of the most recognizable figures in the world. Her image is timeless, her story tragic, and her influence undeniable. Yet Marilyn Monroe was more than a Hollywood bombshell. She was a woman who overcame hardship, challenged expectations, and became an enduring symbol embraced by generations—including the LGBTQ+ community.

Born Norma Jeane Mortenson on June 1, 1926, in Los Angeles, California, Marilyn's childhood was marked by instability. She never knew her father, and her mother struggled with mental illness. Norma Jeane spent much of her youth in foster homes and orphanages, searching for the security and acceptance that often seemed just out of reach.

At age 16, she married to avoid returning to an orphanage. During World War II, while working in a defense factory, she was discovered by a photographer. Her beauty and charisma quickly opened doors to modeling and eventually Hollywood. Adopting the name Marilyn Monroe, she transformed herself into one of the biggest stars of the 1950s.

Films such as Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, How to Marry a Millionaire, The Seven Year Itch, and Some Like It Hot made her a global sensation. Her combination of glamour, humor, and vulnerability captivated audiences. Yet behind the spotlight, Monroe battled anxiety, depression, and the pressures of fame. She often found herself trapped by an industry that valued her appearance more than her intelligence and talent.

Monroe fought against those limitations. She established her own production company at a time when few women in Hollywood exercised such control over their careers. She studied acting seriously and sought more meaningful roles, proving she was far more than the stereotype that studios had created.

Her life ended tragically on August 4, 1962, when she died at the age of 36. Questions and conspiracy theories have lingered for decades, but what remains certain is that the world lost a remarkable talent far too soon.

So why does Marilyn Monroe continue to resonate, particularly within the LGBTQ+ community?

Part of the answer lies in her humanity. Marilyn understood what it meant to feel different, misunderstood, and judged. She spent much of her life constructing a public identity while privately struggling with acceptance and self-worth. Many LGBTQ+ individuals see parallels between Monroe's experiences and their own journeys of navigating societal expectations while striving to live authentically.

Marilyn also became a symbol of resilience. Despite immense obstacles, she reinvented herself and achieved extraordinary success. Her story speaks to anyone who has faced rejection, discrimination, or hardship and refused to let those challenges define them.

The LGBTQ+ community has long celebrated figures who embody both strength and vulnerability. Monroe's glamorous image, dramatic life story, and outsider status made her a natural icon. Drag performers have honored her for decades, and her influence can be seen throughout LGBTQ+ culture, from fashion and entertainment to art and activism.

Perhaps most importantly, Marilyn Monroe reminds us that fame does not erase pain, and beauty does not guarantee happiness. Her life encourages compassion and challenges us to look beyond appearances.

As we mark what would have been her 100th birthday, Marilyn Monroe remains far more than a movie star frozen in time. She is a symbol of perseverance, self-invention, and the enduring desire to be seen and valued for who we truly are.

One hundred years after her birth, Marilyn Monroe's legacy continues to shine—not simply because she was beautiful, but because she was profoundly human.
