🌟 Chamber Member Spotlight: Dutch's Bar 🌟

Some businesses become more than just a place to stop—they become part of a community's story. Dutch's Bar is one of those places.

Located in the heart of Marenisco, Dutch's has been a familiar gathering spot for decades. The village itself traces its roots back to 1887, when the railroad and timber industry helped establish one of the western U.P.'s earliest communities. As Marenisco evolved from a logging town into a destination for outdoor recreation, places like Dutch's which planted in the early 1920's remained at the center of local life.

Over the years, Dutch's has welcomed generations of locals, hunters, anglers, ATV riders, snowmobilers, and travelers exploring the Lake Gogebic region. It's the kind of place where trail conditions are discussed over a drink, fishing stories get a little bigger with each telling, and visitors quickly feel like regulars.

As the seasons change—from summer fishing and ATV adventures to fall hunting and winter snowmobiling—Dutch's continues to be one of those classic Upper Peninsula establishments that reflects the character, hospitality, and traditions of our area.

Today, Dutch's remains a recognizable Marenisco landmark and a valued member of our business community.

🌲 KNOW OUR AREA: THE KONTEKA – A WESTERN U.P. ICON 🌲

For more than 70 years, the Konteka has been a landmark in White Pine and a destination for visitors exploring Michigan's Western Upper Peninsula.

The story begins in 1955, during the height of White Pine's copper mining boom. As the White Pine Mine began production and families poured into the area, the community needed a place to gather. The Konteka was built to be just that. Designed by renowned Michigan architect Alden B. Dow, it quickly became the social center of town, offering lodging, dining, entertainment, and services all under one roof.

In those early years, White Pine was a thriving mining community filled with opportunity and optimism. Mine workers, local families, and visitors alike gathered at the Konteka for meals, celebrations, bowling leagues, and community events. It wasn't just a business—it became part of the fabric of everyday life.

When the White Pine Mine closed in 1995, much of the town changed. Like many Upper Peninsula mining communities, White Pine faced challenges as its primary industry disappeared. Yet through it all, the Konteka remained.

Today, the Konteka continues to be one of the Western U.P.'s most unique destinations. Visitors come from across the Midwest to enjoy comfortable lodging, great food, a welcoming atmosphere, direct access to snowmobile and ATV trails, and one of the area's most famous attractions—watching wild black bears from the dining room windows.

While many businesses have come and gone over the decades, the Konteka has stood the test of time. It remains a living connection to White Pine's mining heritage while continuing to create new memories for generations of travelers.

Whether you're stopping in after a ride through the trails, exploring the Porcupine Mountains, or simply looking for a true Upper Peninsula experience, the Konteka continues to showcase the hospitality, history, and character that make Michigan's Western U.P. such a special place.

Second, we have the famous Hoop’n Holler — a place that has become much more than just a tavern over the years. Tucked away along the north end of beautiful Lake Gogebic, the Hoop has grown into a true Western Upper Peninsula tradition. For decades, snowmobilers, fishermen, hunters, locals, boaters, and travelers alike have made the trip to “The Hoop” to experience the kind of Northwoods hospitality that defines Michigan’s Western U.P.

Located in the Merriweather area near the northwest shoreline of Lake Gogebic, the tavern became a well-known gathering place long before social media or tourism campaigns existed. Word traveled the old-fashioned way — through stories shared at campfires, trail stops, and lakeside cabins.

Over time, Hoop’n Holler earned its reputation as one of the region’s iconic snowmobile destinations and classic trail taverns.

Today, visitors still stop in after long rides across the Western U.P.’s extensive trail system or after days spent fishing at Michigan’s Upper Peninsula's largest inland lake. Known for hearty food, cold drinks, and a welcoming atmosphere, the tavern continues to keep the spirit of traditional Northwoods bar culture alive.

Many longtime guests say what makes the Hoop special is the history found inside its walls. Stories of old resorts, legendary snowmobile rides, fishing trips, and Lake Gogebic history have all become part of the experience.

Over the years, locals and travelers have often said that the Hoop was home to “the farthest bar stool in the Eastern Time Zone” — a saying that perfectly captures the remote Northwoods feel of the tavern. For many visitors, finally grabbing a seat at the Hoop meant they had truly arrived in the heart of Michigan’s Western Upper Peninsula.

Even today, Hoop’n Holler remains one of the most recognizable taverns around Lake Gogebic. Many refer to it as “the only Hoop in the Yoop,” a nickname that perfectly captures the tavern’s lasting place in Upper Peninsula tradition and tourism culture.
