Central Kentucky Wildlife Hospital

Central Kentucky Wildlife Hospital CKWH is a 501c3 nonprofit with a goal to help rescue, rehabilitate and release native KY wildlife.

Located in Madison county in the scenic hills outside Berea, Kentucky, our rescue is dedicated to caring for the region's unique wildlife population. Dr. Simmons has completed several internships at zoos and wildlife hospitals which has helped to build his wealth of knowledge in wildlife and veterinary medicine. Furthermore, he has always had a deep and abiding passion to help save sick and injure

d wildlife, which was started at young age thanks to his late brother Brian who shared the same love and compassion for animals.

Introducing CKWH’s newest patient, who was hit by a car and was actually brought in my EMS to see Dr. Simmons.

He has made a remarkable recovery after a short hospital stay.

CKWH is a Berea based wildlife rehab focused on treating injured wildlife and but also assists other rehabbers by providing life saving care through the donation of Dr. Simmons time and expertise. Donations to cover the cost of day-to-day supplies are always needed as well as items directly from our Amazon wishlist.

After their mother died prematurely, these orphaned opossums depended on the care and expertise of CKWH to make it to today, a very big and exciting day…

These chunky, spicy opposums are ready to face the world! It’s 👏🏼release day👏🏼 for these little opossums who are ready to forage and explore the world as intended.

Join us in wishing them luck!

It’s Dr. Simmons birthday today! 🎉

Will you help him celebrate by making a donation to help with wild critters in his care, like this little fawn?

This is one of six being raised under CKWH, and she’s a resilient but also sick girl. After surviving a dog attack, she developed a nasty infection in her front shoulder. She is frequently requiring infection to be drained and on antibiotics.

Donations can be made via the donate button, or to PayPal! https://www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted_button_id=PCTMVYW7PJJD2

Such an awesome feeling see one of last years fawns thriving, but even more so when it’s a special one. Our three legged girl was spotted yesterday evening creeping through the woods and stopped for a snack and a photo. What a transformation!

We currently have six fawns right now this season, who will be bottle fed for quite some time. Send CKWH some love this so you can see more before and after photos like this next year. 🦌

Tis the season! We have one fawn now, and expect for them to start rolling in more and more each day. This baby lost its twin after being attacked by a dog. We also had another that unfortunately could not be saved after sustaining injuries from farm equipment in a hayfield.

As a reminder, unless you encounter an injured fawn, if you see a fawn without its mother, don’t intervene immediately. Unless a fawn has been unattended for up to 48 hours, or there is evidence that their mother is deceased, it's best to leave a fawn alone. Does often leave their fawns alone for long periods of time to avoid attracting predators.

Fawns in our care are one of the most expensive critters, as they are with us for several months before they are release ready. It’s estimated that just one fawn costs around $500 to rehabilitate. 🦌😅

Things were a bit quiet around during the colder months, but as soon as we entered spring, babies began being born and so the busy season begins.
Even if we aren’t great about posting them, we’ve taken in several critters this week alone.

Humans and their companion animals are often the reason wildlife find themselves in need, such as this opossum who was attacked by a dog and found herself needing an amputation. She had her surgery this weekend and bounced back strongly.

These surgeries are of course done at no charge to the organization by Dr. Simmons - but there are still costs involved. Medical supplies, medication, equipment, enclosures, and of course food for the critters are what we need your help with!

KEEP WILDLIFE WILD!

Reminder - there are still young wildlife out there that may be considered to be orphaned, abandoned or in danger. Leave them alone - the momma will probably return!

Removal of animals from the wild is unlawful, and usually results in orphaned wildlife. INFO HERE: https://bit.ly/3K9kC5v

Willow says hello, and happy Friday! 🦌

While we didn’t manage to get a release video of the deer this year, we did manage a post release photo of our tri-pod girl to share with you. Wilbur the buck is camera shy and has only peaked out of the woods occasionally to snag a bite of corn.

We are excited to share that we finally have our Facebook donate button fixed!! We have been having issues with it for quite some time, which hasn’t been good for donations. If you’d like to contribute to the ongoing costs of the critters care, we’d certainly be thankful.
