The Second Rule
When in doubt, choose generosity.

Clients are invited to return to Berea Food Bank once a month while their need persists. Everything is regularized and every client receives groceries to last a week--breakfast, lunch, and dinner--according to family size, once a month.

But when "Denise" dropped by to ask for aid twice in a month because her grandchildren had suddenly become her responsibiltiy--the Second Rule applied: "When in doubt, choose generosity."

Every volunteer is empowered--and expected--to choose generosity to best serve our neighbors in need. It's as simple as that.

And you make such generosity possible. With your help, your donation once a year--or a regular monthly gift--you're choosing generosity for Denise, for a family forced to to start from scratch after an eviction, or for a single mother who needs extra support after losing a job: The Second Rule.

The First Rule
No one is ever turned away from Berea Food Bank empty handed. Period.

This is about "Mary" and the rule we've carved in stone.

When I spoke to Mary she was at the end of her rope after being mistreated at another emergency food pantry. After waiting days for an appointment, she was turned away empty handed--hungry kids waiting in the car--because she was missing a document they require--a single piece of paper stood between her and feeding her children.

Let me tell you about 'documents' and food pantries...
The typical food pantry has a list of documents they require of everyone, such as:
--paystub/benefit check for everyone in household
--original social security card for everyone in household
--social security statement for the retired and disabled
--W2 or certified tax return
--photo id card with current address
--copy of lease for renters with all residents' names on it
--proof of ownership for homeowners
--copy of a utility bill in applicant's name at current address
--proof of SNAP/WIC benefits.. I could go on.

This is wrong. It's about guarding a gate against the 'unworthy', hoarding resources for fear of running out, and keeping 'the wrong people' from having enough to eat. We reject all of this and throw our door wide open to serve Bereans in need. We have no gate to guard.

Every day we welcome Berea Seniors who never thought they'd need a food bank.
It's heartbreaking.

Every month over 200 seniors rely on us to keep food on the table.
It's hard work that we embrace with joy in the sharing.

Every year their number increases--30% more are expected in 2027.
It's our mission to make sure hunger finds no home in Berea.

Berea Food Bank Annual Fund Drive begins--October 1 through November 7

Times are tough for our low income neighbors. This year we've seen an increase of almost 40% in the number of people coming to us for food assistance--with the greatest increase among families with children.

Today over 700 Bereans rely on Berea Food Bank every month to keep food on the table. We need your help now more than ever to make sure Hunger finds no Home in Berea.

By giving now you'll make sure we can continue to provide a week's worth of good, wholesome groceries to keep hunger at bay all Winter and into the new year.
