The Arkansas State Committee of the National Museum of Women in the Arts

The Arkansas State Committee of the National Museum of Women in the Arts with our statewide audience. Exhibitions for free public viewing are the heart of the Arkansas Committee’s program.

The Arkansas Committee of the National Museum of Women in the Arts highlights the accomplishments of Arkansas women artists and shares the groundbreaking work of the Museum in Washington, D.C. Helen Walton and Ed Dell Wortz established the Arkansas Committee of the National Museum of Women in the Arts in 1989 to carry out the museum’s mission: boosting awareness and appreciation of women artists,

who are still underrepresented in museums and undervalued in the market. The Committee is run by volunteers across Arkansas with no staff or headquarters, but online all the time at www.acnmwa.org, Facebook, and Instagram. In addition, ACNMWA awards one mid-career artist a $2000 stipend and one summer internship $2000 stipend annually through open competitions, plus maintains a juried artist registry online, open to applicants biannually. Women to Watch is our signature traveling exhibition of Arkansas women artists, guest-curated by invited Arkansas museum professionals in conjunction with NMWA’s triennial Women to Watch thematic exhibitions. We encourage collectors and curators to see Arkansas women artists, and all art lovers to discover and support the National Museum of Women in the Arts.

Start your week with 5 Fast Facts about Women to Watch, while Arkansas Women to Watch 2026: Words Become Matter. Don't forget to see the traveling exhibition in Blytheville now through Saturday, June 13, when it will wrap up before traveling to its next stop at the Arts & Science Center for Southeast Arkansas in Pine Bluff, Arkansas.

1️⃣ In 2008, the National Museum of Women in the Arts introduced its Women to Watch program to increase the visibility of promising women artists who are deserving of national and international attention.
2️⃣ W2W was created specifically for NMWA’s 26 U.S. regional and international affiliated committees, including the Arkansas Committee of the National Museum of Women in the Arts.
3️⃣ The museum’s signature Women to Watch exhibition program always centers on a different theme. NMWA curators select the theme, and affiliates invite nationally approved local arts professionals to guest curate submissions to the national museum exhibit.
4️⃣ Since 2010, ACNMWA has participated in every W2W exhibition, setting the precedent of organizing a state tour of all its nominees, in order to offer our artists and our widespread audiences a chance to get acquainted.
5️⃣ A major exhibition at NMWA, including one artist chosen by NMWA curators from the Arkansas exhibition and showcasing the national museum's history of collecting artists' books, will be open from April 11 to August 15, 2027.

We’re continuing our focus on our 2026 Artist Award Winner, Laura Terry, with a glimpse at another one of her pieces.

Laura works on paper with water media, allowing her to connect with the subject. To quote the artist, "this way of working is an analogy of the landscape itself: trees, mountains, sky, and flora are individual elements that co-exist in a particular place. In the way these individual elements create the larger landscape, the pieces of paper I compose also create a larger image."

Today's feature from our 2025 - 2027 Juried Artist Registry is artist Emily Wood.

Emily paints flowers to find both joy and connection with the natural world, as well as with the woman she has known. To quote the artist, "I come from a long line of makers, master gardeners, and aesthetes who gave a lot of time, effort, and devotion to plants. I watched them work hard at underappreciated and unpaid labor, and I think about all the hidden labor women have always done in daily life." In her works, she chooses to "paint faces of women hiding among the flowers to represent these women, their efforts, and the beauty around us."
