Whole Child Collaborative (WCC) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization existing to provide research assistance, technical support and advocacy to groups and individuals seeking new ideas in the education for children who learn differently. Both founders of WCC, Sharon and Kimberly, have experience in serving families impacted by a child with disabilities. Sharon Bense taught in the special educatio

n field for 18 years before opening an advocacy and special education tutoring business. Kimberly Parker served families for 10 years as a special education advocate offering training to caregivers, workshops to the community, and attending school meetings with parents. After meeting students with a need for a nontraditional school environment, they opened Clover Community School. WCC currently has two programs functioning under its umbrella of services: The Rachelle Center for Family Training and Clover Community School. The Rachelle Center for Family Training:
Named after a tireless parent advocate, the Rachelle Center for Family Training was founded to provide in depth training and support to parents and caregivers of students with special needs in the public school system. Families empowered with knowledge of the special education process can achieve better outcomes for their students. A good reminder for us all…remember you aren’t alone!

Wishing you and yours a Very Merry Holiday Season from The Rachelle Center for Families and all of us here at Whole Child Collaborative!

The holiday season is the perfect storm for meltdowns and tantrums. This can be SO frustrating for parents when they are simply trying to create happy memories for their children,
WHY???

(1) A child’s brain is more easily overwhelmed by sensory input (due to an underdeveloped hippocamus and thalmus)

(2) They lack the emotional awareness adults do. Children who can’t identify their emotions or their needs may get easily overwhelmed.

(3) No coping skills: It’s hard to manage your emotions if you don’t have the skills. These take time to learn and master

(4) Unrealistic expectations: there may be pressure to get dressed up, take perfect family pictures, and be in a good mood for meals and events when that may not be how they are feeling inside

We had some last minute cancellations for our class tomorrow morning.

From Emotions to Advocacy: Mock IEP

Child care is full but parents are still welcome to register.

Bring a copy of your child’s last IEP if you have it.

How do you WIN for your child without LOSING your mind and dignity? This training will be an interactive mock IEP where you can experience what the IEP planning process may look like and how YOU can advocate for your child with confidence.

Many of our trauma kiddos struggle with separation, but we have to find balance in meeting our work and personal needs as well.

If your kiddo struggles with trauma and attachment, Connections Training is a non-judgmental, safe resource you should check out!

How do you maintain connection with the little people in your life when you are away from each other?

This parent/child bracelet set includes a tiny solid heart bracelet that my little has at home with her. I talked to her last night and she asked ‘mom, will you wear your heart tomorrow and I’ll wear mine? It will be like we are together even though we are far apart.’

It’s a little thing that can help her heart, build connection, and keep the sense of felt-safety in our relationship even when we are far apart.
