With the New Year just a couple days away, I’d like to reflect on our works this year. We have, of course held our annual Memorial Day Program, and our annual POW/MIA and Flag Retirement Program we host with Cub Scout Pack 3411.

We’ve worked alongside with East TN Veterans Council, the Chestuee Chapter of the DAR, and our Auxiliary to host a monthly free veterans breakfast each month.

Our local Post members, with members of our Department have traveled to Nashville, and DC to lobby for veteran’s rights, and services.

We teamed up with South Polk Elementary, Benton Elementary, the 4-H Club, and the Boy’s and Girl’s Club to teach Flag Etiquette, and Flag History.

We have handed out Pocket Constitutions to our Polk County 7th graders, and Americanism Packets to all our schools, and we even helped a local Boy Scout with his Eagle Scout Project, and have been behind the scenes lending and operating our PA System to local groups who’ve held events.

I know this is not everything we have done, and we don’t do these things for praise, we do them for the love of our Veterans, and our community, and we have big plans for not only the upcoming year, but the years to come. So at this time we would like to extend our thanks, and well wishes for everyone this coming New Year!

I know people have become accustomed to seeing crosses out for Veterans Day. I recognize the confusion. We have decided to no longer place crosses for Veterans Day as it is a day of celebration and not a day of mourning like Memorial Day. We do recognize our fallen brothers and sisters everyday, but we celebrate on Veterans Day, and mourn on Memorial Day, therefore we will no longer place crosses for Veterans Day.
