The Oasis Sanctuary Our Mission is a Life-Long Commitment The Oasis Sanctuary is a life-care facility for captive Exotic birds.

In particular we are a refuge for parrots, cockatoos, macaws and other Psittacine birds; although we do accept Passerines (finches and canaries) Columbiformes (doves and "fancy" or racing pigeons) and other captive avian species. As a true sanctuary, we do not offer birds for adoption, however we work with and refer birds requiring re-homing to bona fide adoption programs around the country. The Oasis Sanctuary is not a zoo, and does not have regular hours when we are open to the public. With reasonable notice we are usually able to accommodate visitors. Please call Janet Trumbule or Julie Dyson @520-212-4737 to make an appointment and get directions to the facility. The Oasis is located approximately 50 miles east of Tucson, Arizona in the San Pedro River Valley, not far from Benson, Arizona. Our remote location affords a peaceful home for our 800+ residents, and minimizes conflict with our human neighbors.

Calling All Helping Hands! 🍂 Fall Volunteer Day is Coming!

OK, folks! We could really use your helping hands at The Oasis Fall Volunteer Day on November 7!

If you’ve joined us for a volunteer day in the past and would like to come back (we hope you will), please contact us to reserve your spot. We’d also love to welcome some new faces to our Oasis volunteer family!

With cooler weather approaching, it’s time to prepare our aviaries for winter. We’re looking for a dedicated group of hard workers who can commit to spending the full day helping us tackle these important projects. To keep everyone organized, productive, and safe, the number of volunteers will be limited, so be sure to save your spot now.

Volunteers will be assigned to workgroups focused on two important tasks:

Winterizing the Aviaries and outdoor beautification, raking under outdoor cages and Aviaries:

Come ready for a day of teamwork, camaraderie, and hard but satisfying work! We’ll provide hydration and a delicious lunch to keep everyone fueled up.

Every helping hand makes a difference in keeping The Oasis parrots comfortable and safe as winter approaches. We’re looking forward to seeing familiar faces again and welcoming new members to our volunteer crew!

Are you fascinated by feathers? We are! 🪶

Take a really close look at a feather and you’ll discover an incredible work of nature’s engineering.

A feather may look soft and simple, but underneath it is a complex, hierarchical structure made of beta-keratin, designed for flight, insulation, protection and those spectacular colors we love so much in parrots!

🔬 The Microscopic Interlocking System

> Barbs: Hundreds of parallel branches sprout from the central shaft, or rachis, forming the main surface of the feather’s vane.

> Barbules: Tiny microscopic filaments branch off both sides of each barb.

> Barbicels (hooks): These incredibly tiny hook-like structures connect neighboring barbules, essentially zipping the feather together like microscopic Velcro! This creates the smooth, streamlined surface that helps make flight possible.

And here's the really cool part…

When those barbs become separated or ruffled, a parrot can preen the feather back into place, using its beak to realign those microscopic structures and essentially re-zip its feather!

“Chicken scratching” is a normal instinctive foraging behavior. In the wild, ground foraging parrots like African Greys scratch the dirt and leaf litter to find seeds, minerals, nuts and other food sources and excavate nesting areas.
In captivity, they scratch man made materials such as boxes. This is a natural outlet for their energy.
