Our mission is to provide support, encouragement, education and resources to local writers.

Whether you’re a writer or a writing enthusiast, you are welcome at Central Oregon Writers Guild (COWG). COWG’s goal is to provide and encourage a creative environment and support system for aspiring and acclaimed writers of all ages in all genres. Since its beginning in 2002, COWG has provided meeting places for the exchange of ideas and information and has initiated programs designed to help wri

September 7 — The Pause Button: Monthly Poetry Gathering

📍 Paulina Springs Books, Sisters | 🕠 5:30–6:30pm | Free

🎙️ The Pause Button returns for its first Monday gathering at Paulina Springs Books. Bring a poem to share, yours or someone else's. Read, listen, discuss, and write from a prompt together. Free and open to all. No RSVP needed. 5:30–6:30pm.

September 7 — Word-for-Word Writing Workshop

📍 Cafe Des Chutes, Bend | 🕕 6–8pm | $5

✍️ Word-for-Word meets the first Monday of every month at Cafe des Chutes in Bend. September 7, come write, workshop, and connect. Bring up to 3 pages or just show up with a pen. All skill levels welcome. $5 at the door.

September 8 — COWG Monthly Meeting: "Tips for Staying in the Room" with Jane Kirkpatrick

📍 Deschutes Public Library Central, Community Room 2 | 🕠 5:30–7:30pm | Free
📖 This month's COWG meeting features New York Times bestselling author Jane Kirkpatrick on "Tips for Staying in the Room."

Jane is the author of more than 40 books, including historical novels, narrative nonfiction, and devotionals. This session is about the practical work of writing: how to stay focused, stay motivated, and keep showing up when the writing gets hard.

Free and open to all. 5:30–7:30pm at Deschutes Public Library Central, Community Room 2.

COCC Fall Class: Scriptwriting

📍 COCC Redmond Campus

🎬 COCC Redmond is offering Scriptwriting this fall. The course introduces dramatic writing for both stage and screen: dialogue, scene craft, character development, narrative structure, and manuscript formatting for plays, screenplays, and teleplays. Workshop-based with regular peer feedback.

📝 COCC Bend is offering Creative Nonfiction this fall. The course covers memoir, personal essay, nature writing, travel writing, biography, and journalistic essay through workshop-style feedback and portfolio development. If you have true stories worth telling, this class will help you tell them well.
