Want to switch to drip irrigation, but need a little guidance? Join us THIS SATURDAY to learn all about drip and get hands-on experience converting pop-up sprinklers to drip in the raised veggie beds at Franklin’s Corner Community Garden.
You’ll be helping the community garden save water and reduce weeds from overspray, all while learning some skills to bring home.

Bee or fly?! Swipe to find out…

It’s a HOVER FLY - aka syrphid fly or sweat bee!
A wildly under-appreciated pollinator (second only to bees in pollination studies), this amazing insect mimics the black and yellow coloring of bees as a defensive strategy, but has no stinger and is totally harmless - to humans, anyway. Their larvae are voracious aphid predators in the garden! Tell them apart from bees by their big, buggy eyes and short antennae.
Attract hover flies by planting flat-topped, strong-smelling flowers like wallflower (pictured), yarrow, sweet alyssum, dill, parsley and cilantro.
And yes, they do like to lick up human sweat with their spongy mouthparts, but hey - we all have our place in the ecosystem!
