Calling all gardeners! 📣
It’s your last chance to volunteer with Worthy Garden Club this season. We’ll be doing some fall planting and thinning, and we’d love to teach you some best practices. No RSVP needed.

Ewww, is that MOLD in my soil? Probably not!
🍄‍🟫
If you’re lucky to find it, this is a great example of mycorrhizae (complete with a fruiting mushroom body!), the beneficial soil fungi that develop in healthy soil conditions. When connected with plant roots, these fungi take sugars, carbohydrates and lipids from its host plant, and in return, provide water and essential mineral nutrients from its vast network of fine filaments that reach far beyond where plant roots can go. It’s a symbiotic relationship that makes your landscape healthier and more drought-resilient.
🌱
How do you encourage it? Use a mycorrhizae inoculant at planting and/or top dress your soil with some nice juniper duff (the plant debris that collects underneath). Leave the leaves in fall and practice other organic gardening techniques to maintain biodiversity above and below the soil. It takes ALL forms of life to make an ecosystem function.

The community gardeners are KILLIN’ IT this year! Growing food in Central Oregon is rife with difficulties, and it takes determination, time and lots of learning from failures to get it right. Let’s give a big round of applause for their amazing efforts!

The smoke cleared up just in time to host “Bugger Off!” with Bend Urban Gardens this Saturday. Thanks to all who attended to learn more about embracing and building ecosystem function over chemical pest control in the home garden.

Remember - there are no purely good or bad insects. We need them all to support healthy food webs! There’s a natural predator, parasite or pathogen for every pest. The trick is to create beneficial habitat and find the balance.

It’s that time of year - WHAT’S EATING MY PLANTS?! Any guesses on slides 1, 2 or 3?
Learn more this weekend at our pest control workshop at Franklins Corner Community Garden. We may have to reschedule due to wildfire smoke, so cross your fingers for clearer weather. 🤞
