Every summer, wild steelhead push up the Columbia River and turn into the Deschutes on their way back home.
Past Maupin and around angler’s legs and flies. Fish aim for a small desert tributary: Trout Creek.
ODFW estimates that 25 to 35 percent of wild steelhead returning to the Deschutes Basin spawn there. For a creek that flows only a dozen or so CFS, that's a remarkable thing. Yet, this creek is one of only a few places in the basin where the wild steelhead population is currently classified as stable.
