High Desert Food and Farm Alliance Programs:

Grow and Give- HDFFA's fresh food drive the only program of its kind in Central Oregon. Fresh food donations from local farmers, gardeners, and community members are donated to our regional food bank, NeighborImpact, and distributed to hunger relief agencies throughout Deschutes, Jefferson, and Crook Counties. VeggieRx- A fresh produce prescription pr

ogram that improves healthy eating habits for individuals experiencing food insecurity and diagnosed with diet-modifiable disease. Participants receive fresh vegetables and fruits, nutrition education, and one-on-one support from HDFFA Registered Dietitian-Nutritionist. Agricultural SUpport- HDFFA partners with OSU Extension Small Farms Program, Oregon Tilth, the Oregon Department of Agriculture, and others to coordinate workshops and hands-on training opportunities for farmers to sharpen their skills on everything from crop planning, to marketing strategies to food safety. We also seek funds to pass through to support farmers with infrastructure needs such as hoop and greenhouses. Fresh Harvest Kits- Fresh Harvest Kits are ready-to-make meal kits containing pantry staple items (pasta, tuna, stew), farm fresh vegetables (kale, carrots), Savory Spice (a spice pack) and a recipe card to create a nutritious and delicious meal. HDFFA collaborates with local farms and hunger relief agencies to offer these kits at local food pantries.

Earlier this month, HDFFA and The Latino Community Association hosted our third collaborative event in this series, funded by Central Oregon Health Council! This event brought participants out to Rooper Ranch for a Spanish-language farm tour. Participants got to harvest some produce straight from the field, which was then made into a farm fresh salad enjoyed alongside some tasty pupusas!

Join Deschutes River Conservancy and High Desert Food and Farm Alliance for a tour of Fields Farm, a small, family-run, urban farm in east Bend. For over 40 years, water drawn from the Deschutes River has sustained this farm as the city grew around it. We'll trace the water's path from river to field, learn about river impacts, see how water is used to grow vegetables in Central Oregon, and talk through the challenges of balancing flow restoration and farming through a growing city and a changing climate.

Last month, we launched the updated High Desert Food Trail, featuring 60 businesses around Central Oregon. Over the next few weeks we’ll be sharing bite-sized weekend trips you can experience along the food trail, starting with our first mini-internary: Community Roots in Tumalo! This weekend trip keeps you in the Tumalo area, with a breakfast at Tumalo Coffeehouse, then a visit to Tumalo Lavender and Well Rooted Produce for some u-pick fun. Close out your weekend with a visit to Oregon Alpaca Experiences and enjoy a picnic with baby alpacas!
