The PoetHouse had its first show on the first Friday of April in 2008. One of our first artists was Kaycee Anseth. Kaycee was an integral part of our community. It is with deep sadness that I share the news that Kaycee passed away on Monday morning March 16th. As I write these things, I am reminded though of the way in which Kaycee approached her own mortality - On her terms with courage, a sense of wonder, creativity, openness... very much in the same way she lived the rest of her life. In her last days, she challenged us to rethink how we approach death - she called it "death positivity" and viewed it as leaving behind her chrysalis.

To understand just a little about who Kaycee was, look to her art. Art that is beautiful, unique and well known locally. Each piece exhibits her patience, her eye for the minutest of details, a clear understanding of the big picture and the importance of owning several pairs of really sharp scissors. Kaycee could see things from a unique perspective and she shared that perspective with the rest of us through the million cuts she made with those scissors.

I am sad. I am sad that she had to fight a battle with cancer. I am sad that she was in pain. I am sad that I won't see her again in this life. I am at peace though that she is no longer in pain. I am at peace that I will see Kaycee in the art she left us and in the beauty of nature that surrounds us... a natural world that she deeply loved.

Goodby Kaycee... and thank you.
