Jupiter, getting his spa day the horse way. 🐴💨

Rolling in the dirt isn’t just fun (though it clearly is) — it’s essential horse behavior. A good roll helps:

🌾 Coat & skin health — dust acts as a natural exfoliant and helps remove loose hair
🦟 Bug relief — dirt creates a barrier against flies and other pests
😌 Scratch relief — reaching those hard-to-groom spots along the back and neck
🐴 Herd bonding — foals often pick up the habit by watching mom and the rest of the herd

Jupiter’s had a good teacher — his mama Beauty has been running this sanctuary as matriarch since she arrived here with him as a c**t. Some lessons you just learn by watching. Follow us for more equine rescue and sanctuary life updates.

Skydog Sanctuary Clare, well deserved! Thank you for all the amazing rescue work you do along with educating others about this vital topic! Without Clare, there would be no Broken Arrow Ranch & Sanctuary. She has been there for us every step of the way! Clare is truly amazing!

We hope the pace of your weekend has been slow and sweet. Slowing down does something real to our nervous system - it shifts you out of fight-or-flight mode and into safety, ease and calm. Our mules have a natural tendency to watch over and protect our horses creating an even greater feeling of sanctuary safety. Many of our rescues arrived carrying trauma, and it’s this unhurried pace and total freedom that creates and nurtures our healing environment.

Catch me if you can 💨

One second Jupiter’s tearing across the field to greet us like a long-lost friend. The next? He’s spun on his heels and taken off. This is what play and freedom looks like at Broken Arrow Ranch and Sanctuary — our horse rescues are wild and free, always.

Throwing it back three years ago with Summer and baby Colibri getting some healthy horse treats! Colibri is still learning here how to take treats using the flat hand approach as always. She fumbled the first treat which Summer quickly grabbed! She did get plenty of treats that day after some practice. We cherish these loving interactions with our wild horses rescues.

Flashback incoming! Throw back to when Sammy was born at Broken Arrow — our first live birth at the ranch! Reese arrived pregnant, and we didn’t know it yet, but saving her meant saving two lives. A donkey stole her heart, and on Mother’s Day 2023, she gave birth to Sammy — a spirited little mule who came out strong and healthy.

What’s the gossip around the water cooler today? Horses are seriously social creatures- they live in tightly knit bands with their own pecking order, led by a lead mare who calls the shots on where the herd grazes, drinks and moves next. So really this water break is prime time for catching up on the day’s herd news before heading out to graze our beautiful pastures.

Throwback to baby Sammy looking for more treats! Sammy has never been shy about anything! A sweet memory of sanctuary life at Broken Arrow.
