The Pegasus Project, Inc.

The Pegasus Project, Inc. The Pegasus Project, Inc. Through love, quality care and superior training methods, we establish a solid foundation of mind and body.

is a Texas-based, 501(c)(3) non-profit, horse rescue organization which facilitates the seizure, rehabilitation and adoption of abused, abandoned, and neglected horses in East Texas. The Pegasus Project is an equine rescue whose mission is to rescue, rehabilitate, retrain and rehome neglected, abused and abandoned horses, donkeys and mules throughout Texas. We prepare the horse to be adopted by ca

refully-screened forever homes or to serve the needs of at-risk or disabled children and adults through therapeutic riding programs. For a small number of special-needs horses, Pegasus is a lifelong sanctuary. As part of our mission, we respond to cruelty complaints and conduct investigations and seizures of neglected and abused animals with the assistance of local law enforcement. We take these horses into our program and nurse them back to health. Each horse is handled daily and is placed on a diet to meet its specific nutritional needs. Once healthy, we dedicate our resources to training the horse, using natural and traditional horsemanship techniques. We believe that an untrained horse faces an uncertain future. These animals need more than sanctuary. They need people dedicated to improving their quality of life and capable of providing the level of care necessary to revitalize their bodies and spirits. We are a unique horse rescue organization because of the level of specialized attention each horse receives. Each is evaluated by a professional trainer and receives specific care, development and training by accomplished horsemen in order to create a respectful, well-trained partner for its future family. At The Pegasus Project, we give horses wings!

Our friend Jennifer Wiggins shared the following that some of you may find helpful:

Good info. Catron IV seems to still be readily available. The F10 (antiseptic/insecticide formula, specially!) ointment I couldn’t find online in the US and shipping from Europe was cost prohibitive, in my opinion. Although sold out nearly everywhere in the US, I was able to find the spray at DFA Farm Supplies. It’s not cheap ($65/500ml bottle) and shipping (starts at $25 for 1-5 bottles) and tax on top adds even more, so it would probably be a great idea to get a group order together to make the cost of shipping more cost effective. I hate the idea of hoarding essential supplies, but I also think it’s smart to have some on hand as insurance.

It's Forever Home Friday! We are now beginning to feature our companion-only horses because pasture ornaments need adoption too!❤️ Today we share our handsome gent, Jett.

Jett is a 27 year old Quarter Horse gelding. In 2012 he was rescued from a bad situation in Florida by Tamara Hinson Robinson, who later turned to Pegasus to help this horse. Pegasus accepted Jett into our program in July 2013. We spent about 6 weeks getting Jett to proper weight, and then Pegasus trainer, Don Knapp, started working to build muscle tone through ground work. Once Jett was physically healthy, Don began working with him under saddle. Unfortunately, Jett proved to be very troubled when saddled, leading to extreme bucking. Our vet determined that Jett's spinal confirmation led to pain with a saddle and the weight of a rider. Poor Jett had been subjected to years of pain under prior owners and trainers. We put an end to that. Jett has spent the past fourteen years under our loving care. Each year he has become more and more loving and gentle, and he is 100% pasture sound.

We offer this lovely fellow for adoption as a companion horse only. If you are looking for a beautiful horse to love or to serve as a solid companion for another horse, Jett is your answer. He's sweet, engaging, and he loves attention. He has excellent ground manners. Jett can be a bit reactive, and so his adopter will need to have good horse-handling skills. He stands well for the farrier and he does nicely with vetting, but sudden movements can startle him. He's an excellent baby-raiser and can be trusted in the pasture with any gelding. He cannot share space with mares.
This wonderful guy deserves to live out his life in peace, surrounded by a loving family. Jett would love to be adopted along with his BFF, Blazer (who we featured three days ago!)
The Robinson family continues to sponsor Jett to help cover the cost of his care. We are extremely grateful for their continued commitment to Jett. 🥰

It's Take Me Home Tuesday! We are now featuring our companion-only horses because pasture ornaments need adoption too! Today we share our best boy, Blazer! 💛💛

Blazer was one of three studs in the Jacksonville seizure of June 2011. This handsome Quarter Horse was among the most healthy of the nine horses rescued, but he was one of the most skittish. He sustained a training injury that prevented us from developing him under saddle. Over the years, we have devoted lots of time to this guy and just worked on getting him to accept humans in his space. He required lots of TLC to recover from his emotional scars. Blazer is now the biggest snuggle bug and soaks up all the attention you can give him. A more gentle horse has never graced the planet.

Blazer has excellent manners. We can easily trim his feet, provide veterinary care and handle him without issue. This gorgeous 22 year old gelding is an excellent pasture mate and is kind and playful with other horses. Blazer would LOVE to be adopted with his BFF, Jett, who will be featured on this page in three days.

It's Forever Home Friday, and so we are featuring one of our rideable (and adoptable!) horses. Today we are sharing our lovebug, Penny!

Penny is a 13-year-old Tennessee Walker x Quarter Horse mare. She was born and raised in a loving home, but her mother died when she was a foal. Penny grew up with a kind gelding named Frosty. Frosty was all Penny knew for the first 9 years of life. In 2022, Pegasus agreed to accept both Frosty and Penny into our program when their owners became unable to care for them. Penny was sweet and well-loved, but she didn't know much. In fact, upon her arrival to the Pegasus ranch, she was surprised to learn that other horses even existed! She was thrilled with this discovery.

After Penny settled in, we began her training. In the fall of 2022, Penny went to Rockin' X in Purcell, Oklahoma, where Kit Johnson started her under saddle. Penny proved to be quite willing and brave on the trails. After a few months with Kit, and then a few more months with the Pegasus trainers, Penny traveled to Burbank, Oklahoma and spent three months with Zoe Chappelear on a huge cattle ranch. Zoe gave Penny lots of new experiences, pushing cattle and going on long rides across the range. Penny next spent a couple of months with the fantastic Jake Gelinas of Gelinas Horsemanship in Gainesville, Texas, where she got lots more experience being ridden out and about on a cattle ranch.

Penny is now back at Pegasus and is ready for her forever home. She is so very, very sweet. She loves people and adores being groomed and doted upon. She is going to make someone the most amazing trail partner.

It's Take Me Home Tuesday, and so we are featuring one of our rideable (and adoptable!) mules. Today we are sharing our oh-so-spicy girl, Sioux!

Sioux came to Pegasus in February 2015, as a four-month-old foal. We rescued her and her Quarter Horse mother, Cheyenne, from an Oklahoma kill pen. From the get go, Sioux was special. She has always been a little fireball, full of fun, curiosity and mischief. Immediately upon arrival, we began working with Sioux to get her comfortable with humans. By August, we had weaned her from Cheyenne and introduced her to a herd of horses that included another mule. The transition was easy for her.

Since mules need more time than horses to physically and mentally mature, we didn't rush getting her started under saddle. The first few years of her life were filled with ground work, carrying around ba****ck pads and eventually saddles, and being ponied off of our seasoned horses.

In March of 2022, Sioux went to Isaac and Kit Johnson's Rockin' X Academy, where she was started under saddle. Because we had her fully prepared, her saddle training went smoothly. Sioux spent a total of 3 months at Rockin' X, and then she returned to Pegasus where our trainer, Anthony LaSpina, began to ride her regularly. Over the summer of 2023, Sioux was with Rockin' X alum, Zoe Chappelear, in northern Oklahoma to experience life on a cattle ranch. In the spring of 2024, Sioux spent a couple of months with Jake Gelinas (Gelinas Horsemanship) to continue giving her new experiences with talented trainers.

Sioux has returned to us and is ready for her forever home. Sioux develops very strong bonds with her pasture mates and thrives on consistency and discipline. She will need an experienced adopter to manage her powerful personality. Trust and relationship are very important to Sioux. She will give you everything she has if she loves you. Sioux is a fun little ride and moves very forward down the trail. RIDING VIDEOS ARE AVAILABLE HERE: https://www.mypegasusproject.org/sioux
If you prefer to adopt Sioux as just a companion and not a riding mule, we are open to that as well.
